Top Tips to Increase Efficiency in Spay-Neuter Dr. Brian DiGangi, MS, DABVP (Canine & Feline Practice, Shelter Medicine Practice) • Large-scale studies have demonstrated the safety of pediatric surgical sterilization with mortality rates as low as 0.03%, comparable to (or lower than) those of older patients. • For ovariohysterectomy: place the midline abdominal incision more caudally in adult cats and in pediatric patients of both species, but place more cranially in adult dogs. • A scrotal approach to canine orchiectomy can lead to a 30% reduction in surgical time, with no difference in post-operative rates of hemorrhage, pain, or swelling. • Place a tattoo to indicate surgical sterilization near the midline in female dogs and in both male and female cats; in male dogs, tattoos should be placed in the pre-scrotal region.
