HOWDOES ITWORK? There have been a number of recent medical studies that help prove dry needling stimulates biochemical and physiological changes in the body which help reduce pain. Dry needling is not synonymous with the term acupuncture. Acupuncture is derived fromOriental Medicine with the purpose of redirecting the flow of energy (“Qi”) along traditional Chinese meridians for the treatment of disease. Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction in some muscle, bone, joint, and nerve conditions. The term “Dry” is used because there is no medication or fluid being injected into the body. Electric Dry Needling may be used by connecting electrodes to the needles and stimulating the tissue at low frequencies. This is an invasive technique which will only be considered if a patient has sub-acute or chronic symptoms which have not responded favorably to conservative methods.

MOVING TO OUR NEXT PATTERN OF LIFE

Rhythm is an essential part of our lives. As the busyness of Summer fades, Fall is a time of returning to this rhythm; School starts again, the seasons change, and the pace of the day to day is restored. There is definitely something to be said for taking a break from the patterns of everyday life, but the value of consistent, focused routine cannot be understated. As we move into this next pattern of life and work, the threat of getting bogged down by all the details and losing sight of the goal is all too real. However, the best growth I have seen in my life has been rooted in consistency and dedication. As we transition back into the rhythm of fall, we should move step by step toward our goals (around here we call these goals... rocks), not losing sight of our progress in the middle of the mundane. There was a book I read recently where the author told a story about this idea. He had gone back to college as an adult and discovered a big difference between his outlook on learning and the

younger students’. Where his classmates were only focused on the final grade, losing the enjoyment of learning in the process, the author had realized that his own experience was much more fruitful and enjoyable. This was because he took the time to enjoy learning itself, not merely focusing on passing the course. This is an amazing realization that shows the value of rhythm and enjoying the process of life. Two people who have bought into this step-by-step mindset are our two newest physical therapists, Randy Young, and Jonathan Rodgers, who joined our team last month. They are hometown boys who have grown up in Hot Springs. I am so excited to see them join our Spa City family. Their roots are established in this area, and I know they will make a huge difference in this community by serving others with excellence and consistency.

“Now, no swelling and unlimited movement.“

“You’ve definitely earned our recommendation.“

“When we started at Golf Therapy, we had multiple areas that the staff worked on, all of which improved during our time here. The environment made everyone who entered feel welcomed and relaxed, and soon “staff” felt more like “friends.” They were careful to listen, and adjusted our treatment as needed to prevent pain or injury. Thank you Golf Therapy. You’ve definitely earned our recommendation.” - Joe & Mary Ann Sale

“Had lots of swelling and very limited movement in the beginning. Now, no swelling and unlimited movement. Great service and very professional folks here.” - Marie G,

Why Consider Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use to treat myofascial pain. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle, known as trigger points. Some dry needling techniques treat a broader landscape of the central nervous system. This is called non-trigger point treatment. Instead of inserting needles only in the area of pain, the practitioner may instead insert needles in areas around but not directly on the point of pain. This technique relies on the idea that pain is the result of a greater nerve or muscular issue, not a focused one only in the main area of pain.

relieve pain or improve range of motion. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impullses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient’s return to full activity. Dry needling provides relief for some muscular pain and stiffness. In addition, easing the trigger points improves flexibility and increases range of motion. That’swhythismethod isoftenusedtotreatsports injuries, muscle pain, and even fibromyalgia pain.
