• Create a standard operating procedure (SOP) • Include what you will cover, how you will discuss it • When might you transfer patient back to DVM for concern • Who and how will you communicate this service
Review the importance of timely vaccinations
• Outline common pediatric diseases and their prevention • Educate owners on the vaccination schedule and boosters • Discuss ways of exercising and socializing while not fully vaccinated
• Receive buy-in from veterinarian(s) • Schedule a sit down time to present your SOP • Be confident, passionate and yourself!
Oral Care •
Describe the importance of dental health from an early age • Demonstrate proper brushing techniques • Identify early signs and risk factors of periodontal disease
• Unite with the team • Present team your SOP and go over in detail • Align that everyone is onboard
Reproduction •
Importance of spaying/neutering (if not a breeder) • Benefits and timing of the procedure • Recheck and suture removal • Recalculating maintenance energy requirements
• Notify your clients • Have a postcard or flyer to send home with new pediatric patients • Include it in conversation for first visits
Nutrition •
Conduct a nutritional assessment every visit
• Proper nutrition for growing pets and when to transition to adult food • Different dietary needs for various breeds and sizes • Educate owners on selecting high-quality food and proper feeding practices
