PT & Rehab: Life Doesn't Have to Be a Pain in the Neck

The Therapy Bulletin by Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists

The Therapy Bulletin The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body COMMUNITY WELLNESS HEALTH FAIR

The Community Wellness Health Fair, held on March 24 at the Coleman Family Center was a success! There were over 24 Vendors in attendance, including Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists! Free services were offered, such as neck scans, blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks, Child ID Kits, and hearing assessments. Visitors received valuable information on a variety of health topics from the American Cancer Society, Child and Family Services, Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists , Senior Services, and Sisel International just to name a few. In addition, Mid Michigan EMS offered CPR instruction, free health assessments, as well as vision screenings to adults and children. The Coleman Police even brought their new drug disposal station from Coleman City Hall, and MSU Extension had a very popular nutrition game with prizes for everyone.

The idea for a health fair began with a few community members interested in spreading valuable information on Diabetes. To that end several vendors had products specific to Diabetes help and prevention. We had three tables offering Diabetes information; one on nutrition and foot care, another on prevention and treatment, and one allowing visitors to ask questions of someone with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. The Health Fair was followed by a “Family Fun, Walk/Run”, where participants were given a free event t-shirt with a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Over $300 was collected! Physical Therapy & Rehab Specialists were happy to be one of the many sponsors for this year’s event. The plan is to have an even bigger Health Fair in 2019! Keep a look out for ads promoting next year’s Health Fair later this winter. We hope to see you there!

MAY 2018 The Therapy Bulletin The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body LIFE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A PAIN IN THE NECK

Having frequent headaches and neck pain can literally be a pain in the neck, make you less happy and less productive in life. Why do you have that pain in your neck? More often than not it is caused by a muscle or joint problem. Poor posture in the upper neck area can often contribute to headaches, migraines and neck pain. When you look in the mirror do you notice that you have a forward head posture or does your head look a little shifted off to the side, not in alignment with your neck? Where Radiating Headaches Come From Differentproblemswiththeneckmovementwillcausepain tobefelt indifferent areas. For example did you know that if your pain radiates to the forehead or behind the eyes, this can be from “stuck” joints at the top of your neck? Poor movement causes stresses and strains on surrounding muscle and tissue causing irritation thataffects thenerves in thearea.Thenext leveldown, called C2, will often radiate pain to the side of the face / head and back scalp area. Finding the Root of the Problem To narrow the source of the problem, it is important to find out if your pain worsens towards the end of the day or is first thing in the morning. Pain at the end of the day and a complaint of a “heavy head” feeling is an indicator of spinal muscleweakness and spine instability.Theneckand shoulder muscles just can’t tolerate the weight of the head (about the weight of a bowling ball) with daily activities, tiring quickly. Pain in the morning that may radiate to the shoulders or down the arms can be associated with the discs between your neck bones (vertebrae), especially if that pain is radiating. What is the best course of action? The best solution if you have neck pain or headaches is to see a physical therapist. Our physical therapists are experts in evaluating your neck joints and muscles. We help you return the normal movement of your neck joints and muscles gently and safely, relieving your pain.

“I limped around for 6-7 weeks unable to do simple tasks and not much walking before I could get in to see Dr. Mayne. Two days later, I had a right knee arthroscopy to remove a medial torn meniscus. Immediate pain relief after surgery. Started PT the following day and went 2-3 times a week for a month. The staff (Ajay and Ben) were fabulous in encouraging me and giving me additional exercises each visit. I am beginning to feel “normal” again and I am continuing rehab by going to a gym 3-4 times a week to increase my endurance. I would highly recommend this office to anyone.” - D.B. “I would highly recommend this office to anyone.”

Ingredients • 1/3 cup honey • 1/4 cup soy sauce

• 1 lb medium uncooked shrimp, peeled & deveined • 2 teaspoons olive oil • optional: chopped green onion

• 1 Tablespoon minced garlic • 1 teaspoon minced ginger

Directions 1. Whisk the honey, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger (if using) together in a medium bowl. 2. Place shrimp in a large zipped-top bag or tupperware. Pour 1/2 of the marinade mixture on top, give it all a shake or stir, then allow shrimp to marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or for up to 8-12 hours. Cover and refrigerate the rest of the marinade for step 3. (Time-saving tip: while the shrimp is marinating, steam broccoli and microwave some quick brown rice). 3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place shrimp in the skillet. Discard used marinade. Cook shrimp on one side until pink-- about 45 seconds-- then flip shrimp over. Pour in remaining marinade and cook it all until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. 4. Serve shrimp with cooked marinade sauce and a garnish of green onion. The sauce is excellent on brown rice and steamed veggies on the side.
