LONDON BOOK FAIR 2026

ikaya Heart was born in the fifties, on the edges of the Balfour family who owned the Whittingehame

Her childhood experiences of molest had left her with deep conflict around sex, and part of the process of healing involved writing. Celestial Arts published "When the Earth Moves: Women and Orgasm" in 1996, and it was later picked up by Cleis Press who published it as "The Ultimate Guide to Orgasm for Women: How to be Orgasmic for a Lifetime." Prior to this, Mikaya self-published "The Straight Woman's Guide to Lesbianism" and "Lesbian Adventure Stories." Her memoir, "My Sweet Wild Dance", was published it in the early 2000s. Meanwhile she had been studying spirituality and shamanism with Angeles Arrien and other teachers. In 2000, she met Maria Raindancer, and wrote a book about this fascinating woman: "With the Sun in My Eyes: the true story of Maria Raindancer, psychic reader and shamanic practitioner." Mikaya then went on to study radical spirituality with Dayana Jon and that led to the book, "Life, Lies, and Sex: A User's Guide to Being in a Body." She now leads journeys of consciousness, and teaches classes on various radical aspects of spirituality. In 2000, after a number of startling and life- changing spiritual awakenings, she sold her land, went traveling in Africa, Australia and Asia, and wrote the book "A Different Rhythm," which is a series of true stories about her travels. She now lives in Hawaii, where she can be in Nature all year round. One of her favorite pastimes is kitesurfing which she does as often as she can, spending a few months every summer in the Columbia River Gorge, where she is known as something of a legend. She still finds time to teach classes and three more books about her travels in Asia and Africa are waiting on her computer. Screenplays are available for two of her books.

Estate in south-east Scotland. At the age of seven, she was labelled a child genius, which didn't make her life any easier, and she made a clear decision that she was not going to grow up to be like her parents. A strong connection with Nature kept her alive through these difficult times. Hitchhiking, which she discovered when she was fifteen (much to her parents' dismay), opened up all kinds of possibilities for getting away from her family, and in the following years, when she was a barefoot hippie, she hitchhiked all over Europe, North Africa, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, the United States and Mexico, partaking in various drugs on her travels. After two years at York University, she decided that academia was way too sedentary so she dropped out and studied hands-on organic farming instead, following in the footsteps of her great- aunt, Lady Eve Balfour, who pioneered the organic farming movement. Later she also studied carpentry and mechanics, wanting to be sure that she was never dependent on the big corporations. She was active in various left-wing demonstrations, and was arrested more than once. When feminism swept through Europe, she came out as a lesbian feminist and was involved in a number of underground actions protesting sexism in Leeds, the city where she lived at the time. As a woman in manual trades, much of this sexism was constantly in her face, and there were times when she felt her life was in danger. In 1982, she moved to the US and lived happily in a remote part of northern California for several years.
