VINCENT J. TOMEO: Thank you, sir. Good morning.

LOGAN CRAWFORD: Great to have you on the show. I understand it was during a trying time, a medical challenge that you discovered that humor could be the best medicine in many ways. Talk to us a little bit about that.

VINCENT J. TOMEO: Everybody has a crisis, but it's how we deal with that crisis that makes all the difference. And when I heard I had cancer, actually the treatment's worse than the disease. Um, and I remember nurse Poe said to me, "Well, you know, um, try to think positive and, uh, you could, you're a poet, so why don't you just scream out one of your poems to help you get through the treatment?" Which I did, and it helped me. Um and I found out that uh humor can be a uh can act as a medicine during a critical time. We all need to uh laugh and uh we all have challenges but it's how we overcome those challenges that make all the difference. And I chose to use humor as a medicine.

LOGAN CRAWFORD: Absolutely. Life is a roller coaster ride. There are ups, there are downs, but if you can laugh through those times when you're going downhill, it'll make it seem a lot better and hopefully get you back uphill soon. Um, the central figure of your book is a hippopotamus. Tell us about why you chose him and why you think he resonates so much clearly as a literary metaphor. There he is.
