As ci�es grow, not only in numbers but also in size, the smart city agenda con�nues to evolve, finding innova�ve technological and socially-inclusive solu�ons to address socio-economic and environmental challenges that are constantly changing the urban landscape. Evidently, global moves to create safer, secure, more efficient and sustainable ci�es have facilitated improvements in the management of resources including energy, water and the environment, as ar�culated under goal 11 of the UN-SDGs. Equally important, they have also advocated the adop�on of high technology to support business and community developments. It is clear from the assessment that the primary ci�es in Malaysia are par�cularly making good progress in pursuing the journey to be among the top smart ci�es of the world. This is driven by rapid urbanisa�on, Malaysia’s commitment to global sustainable agendas and the rising global trend of disrup�ve technologies adop�on. The na�onal drive towards digitalisa�on and digital economy and the need to a�ract more foreign investments are also contribu�ng to the growth of smart ci�es in Malaysia. The Malaysia Smart City Framework and numerous blueprints announced by leading states and local authori�es have set clear direc�ons and iden�fied ini�a�ves and pilot projects for adop�on as the local authori�es pursue sustainability whilst adop�ng new and emerging technologies.
The many facets of the digital technology including e-services, e-payment, Ar�ficial Intelligence, IoT, smart monitoring and their adop�on, are shown to have been incorporated at varying levels and rates of adop�on in smart ci�es in Malaysia; specifically, on smart government, smart mobility, smart environment and smart economy. Each of these fulfils the respec�ve needs of individual local authori�es. Nevertheless, embracing more state-of-the-art ini�a�ves is needed to improve the a�rac�veness and liveability of Malaysian ci�es. From the survey and interviews conducted, supports and collabora�ons with the private sector are vital in helping local authori�es and smaller businesses access and embrace disrup�ve technologies, addressing issues of financing and know-how in making inroads into developing a smart na�on. In addi�on, ini�a�ves in empowering ci�zens through more inclusive educa�onal and employment opportuni�es, as well as facilita�ng technology and digital adop�on are equally important in crea�ng successful smart ci�es. Inevitably, the goal is to embrace technology in inclusive and locally-relevant ways to enable ci�es and their communi�es thrive within safe, healthy and sustainable environments.
Potential Smart City Business Opportunities
To date, we have already iden�fied the technologies with the greatest poten�al that will support us in Embracing Technology, Towards Enhancing Smart Ci�es and Communi�es. Smart City development is being enabled, powered and integrated by these technologies, making lives easier, more fulfilling and secure for communi�es in many ci�es. The transforma�on of Malaysian ci�es is
beginning to take shape and is gradually accelera�ng as ci�es con�nue to grow and respond to the increase in urban popula�on and growth in community predic�ons. In this respect, current urban challenges demand that energy efficiency, urban sustainability and more importantly, government systems are con�nuously being upgraded to propel the transforma�on.
