MALAYSIA SMART CITY OUTLOOK 2021-2022

Global Practices Growing populaon, traffic congeson and polluon are being addressed globally with the deployment of state-of-the-art digital infrastructures. Barcelona, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul have each adopted integrated

digital systems to improve connecvity and enable efficient mobility. From these examples, Malaysia can look towards adopng new technologies to improve accessibility and bring social benefits to communies.

Barcelona

Hong Kong

Senlo - Smart Mobility Programme An open-source data plaorm that integrates data from a dense network of sensors, used to manage street lights to accommodate real-me traffic condions, regulate parking spaces and manage smart transit services. Stellar Bus Transit System A new orthogonal bus network with hybrid buses to reduce carbon emissions. It also has smart bus shelters using solar panels where a touchscreen provides waing

Traffic and Incident Management System (TIMS) TIMS automacally detects incidents, consolidate traffic and transport conngency plans, disseminate traffic and transport informaon and coordinate exisng and future traffic control and surveillance systems. Universal App Integrate exisng public transport applicaons into one universal app that makes mobility simpler. In-Vehicle Units IVUs furnish motorists with real-me traffic informaon, facilitate tunnel fees payment remotely using an integrated automac tolling system without toll booths. Real-me Traffic Data Traffic detectors are installed to provide real-me traffic informaon. A powerful tool is used to collect the mobile phone data of drivers and passengers to analyse traffic flow and develop measures to reduce traffic congeson and enhance road safety. They provide real-me bus informaon to cizens’ mobile devices and on displays at bus stops.

and arrival mes and USB ports. Bicing - Bicycle Sharing System

Provides 6,000 bicycles for short trips around the city. The Bicing app allows users to check out real-me

availability at staons. Urban Mobility Apps

TMB Virtual: A mobile app that indicates bus stops, lines and distance, superimposed on real-world images. It is also a compass for direcon. Trànsit: An app with real-me traffic updates provided through the municipal traffic cameras. Mapa Tricentenari: An augmented reality app which uses a map of Barcelona to show locaon informaon.

Shanghai

Seoul

5G Smart Metro A smart plaorm with smart operaon, smart service and smart maintenance capabilies. The staons provide high-speed connecvity for phone calls, for accessing the Internet and making mobile payments. Augmented Reality (AR) Smart Glass Panels AR smart glass panels are linked to the train staon’s command centre to monitor passenger flow in real me; locate and control sudden incidents as well as to assess and judge the situaon on the plaorm.

Bus Management System An integrated control centre that monitors the enre traffic system in real me and communicates the informaon to passengers through a service panel at bus stops and via various mobile applicaons and the Internet. Shared Parking System An IoT-based one-stop shared parking system which helps people to check the availability of parking spaces in real me, using a smartphone applicaon. It is also for reserving parking space and paying parking fees. AI Taxi A system that predicts the demand for taxi in real me based on pick-up and drop-off, weather condions demographics and informaon on commercial areas and public transportaon. more a tt rac ti ve to commuters. One way is to introduce newer, more efficient apps to enable passengers to plan their journeys be tt er. The Universal App for example, integrates exis ti ng public transport applica tio ns into one universal tool, making travel easier.

As urban mobility gets more challenging with the rise in city popula ti on, Malaysia’s smart city ini ti a ti ves to encourage wider usage of public transport to reduce road conges ti on, needs to be reinforced with newer, alterna ti ve digital apps that will make buses and t rain
