Where We Are Heading Smart Living projects use technologies and systems designed to help ci�es qualify as fast, sustainable, efficient and take into considera�on the basic needs of local governments and their ci�zens.

Smart Home • Smart home technology (home automa�on) provides homeowners security, comfort, convenience and energy efficiency by allowing them to control smart devices, o�en by a smart home app on their smartphone or other networked device. • Smart TVs connect to the internet to access content through applica�ons, such as on-demand video and music. Some smart TVs also include voice or gesture recogni�on • In addi�on to being able to be controlled remotely and customized, smart ligh�ng systems can detect when occupants are in the room and adjust ligh�ng as needed. Smart lightbulbs can also regulate themselves based on daylight availability • Smart thermostats come with integrated WiFi, allowing users to schedule, monitor and remotely control home temperatures. Smart thermostats also report energy use and remind users to change filters, among other things • Using smart locks and garage-door openers, users can grant or deny access to visitors. Smart locks can also detect when residents are near and unlock the doors for them • With smart security cameras, residents can monitor their homes when they are away or on vaca�on. Smart mo�on sensors are also able to iden�fy the difference between residents, visitors, pets and burglars, and can no�fy authori�es if suspicious behaviour is detected • Pet care can be automated with connected feeders. Houseplants and lawns can be watered by way of connected �mers • Household system monitors may sense an electric surge and turn off appliances or sense water failures or freezing pipes and turn off the water so the basement doesn't flood

Smart Public Safety

• Smart video and audio surveillance While video surveillance has been around for decades, smart technology and new audio capabili�es can make it more effec�ve, ac�onable and connected to other municipal systems. Consider the way that blind spots in video networks, low-quality imagery, and slow data retrieval hampers authori�es’ efforts to protect their ci�zens - with smart video and audio capabili�es, improvements to public safety efforts may include detec�ng vehicle license tags. Special high-resolu�on cameras can even trace on poten�al suspects as well • Smart street ligh�ng systems Street ligh�ng is o�en the first smart technology that ci�es adopt for reduced energy consump�on. Lights also can be networked and altered remotely to deter crime, detect gunfire and make public safety announcements over loudspeakers • Body-worn camera systems Now capable of more than recording videos, some smart body-worn camera systems can include automated transcrip�on, WiFi connec�vity and other solu�ons to help with storing and processing the large amount of video data • Biometric monitoring systems Some biometric devices can iden�fy people based on fingerprints, facial features, iris pa�erns, gaits, voice prints and human thermal signatures. Back-end systems compare these features to a database of known individuals for posi�ve recogni�on • Predic�ve policing Analysing crime sta�s�cs, weather pa�erns and other geographic informa�on can help law enforcement use resources more efficiently and improve public safety by iden�fying predic�ve hot spots, pu�ng police in loca�ons where crime pa�erns have been established. It also can help police arriving at crime scenes be be�er prepared to address a poten�al scenario • Emergency and extreme weather response Powerful so�ware tools used to aggregate informa�on on local condi�ons and resources can help emergency response teams from different jurisdic�ons coordinate during an emergency

• eHealth – Using ICT for Be�er Healthcare The usage of ICT in care helps improve access to care and quality of care by making the health sector more efficient with informa�on and data sharing between pa�ents and health service providers, hospitals, health professionals and health informa�on network Electronic health records, telemedicine services, portable pa�ent-monitoring devices, opera�ng room scheduling so�ware, robo�sed surgery and blue-sky research on the virtual physiological human provide instrumental informa�on between countries when needed • mHealth – Making Healthcare more Mobile “medical and public health prac�ce supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, pa�ent monitoring devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other wireless devices Mobile phones and other devices are used to support pa�ents and improve healthcare. Besides using mobile phones to make calls and send text messages, mHealth also includes more complex features and applica�ons such as general packet radio service (GPRS), third and fourth genera�on mobile telecommunica�ons (3G and 4G systems), GPS and Bluetooth technology • AAL – Tackling Challenges of an Ageing Society Ambient Assisted Living, AAL is one new approach that aims at helping older people live as independently as possible. AAL technologies range from automa�cally switching off kitchen appliances or lights to monitoring vital func�ons and the automa�c no�fica�on of medical assistance in case of an emergency
