MALAYSIA SMART CITY OUTLOOK 2021-2022

Globally, the care and protecon of the environment, as an essenal part of smart city, incorporates the use of highly advanced technologies and collaborave efforts to promote sustainable pracces in cies. The iniaves Global Practices

provided below in Shanghai, Taipei, Melbourne and London demonstrate an integrave and holisc approach in addressing environmental issues. These would be relevant for adopon in Malaysia.

Sponge City / Sponge Park Sponge cies act similar to a sponge that can comprehensively collect and store rainfall and purify it in related facilies. Sponge park is built with grass ditches, water-permeable pavements, greenery rooops and wetlands to store rainwater underneath the garden. Plants are planted to purify the rainwater and connect it to self-service car washing facilies. Smart Rainwater Management System A control system with IoT sensors, big-data analysis and cloud-compung technologies to monitor the amount of rain and react quickly to prevent pooling. The Smart An-Flood System It can measure the amount of rainwater, send alerts and dispatch personnel and flood-prevenon materials automacally. Remote Meteorological Terminals The terminals provide important weather informaon and send flood alerts in different colour codes. Electronic Gauges Electronic Gauges are installed to measure accumulated water on runways and roads. With 4G network, the data will be sent to the smart system in real me. The gauges are connected to dams to release water if necessary.

Disaster Prevenon Monitoring Combined with low-power wide-area network transmission technology, smart messaging recorder, solar power system with ultrasonic / radar wave water level meter, to collect real-me water level data. When it storms, the system will issue a warning noce. Smart City Polluon Source Tracing Program Integrates volale organic compounds, road condions and weather condions, and use of AI to make preliminary judgments on high-pollung hotspots set up monitoring to analyse the composion of VOCs on-site and complete the posioning of polluon sources. 24- Hour Waste and Resource Recycling System This soluon is equipped with airght deodorisaon, low-temperature, bacteria-inhibing and compression funcons. It comes with sensors that collect system informaon through cloud and provide IoT technical analysis to assist in management and recycling efforts, as well as trash collecon route-planning.

Public Solar Smart Recycling and Lier Bins The new bins are solar-powered and contain sensors that alert contractors when they need to be emped. The bins use a gentle compacon system which maximises bin capacity. They take up less space on footpaths, reducing cluer and making it easier for people to move around the city. Food ‘Digester’ Food digester converts food waste into environmentally safe water that flows into the sewerage system. Dehydrator is used to transform food waste into soil condioner which is used in the parks.

FlexLondon Smart Meter Commercialisaon of new digital technologies and safe and secure management of the city’s energy data. London Plan and All London Green Grid Protecng and conserving the city’s parks, green spaces and natural landscapes; providing a guiding set of principles, including standards on access to green space. Improving Access to Green Space and Nature • Providing community grants for creang greener space – investments in small and medium-scale greening projects in green spaces across London. • Greener City Fund – investments in strategically important green infrastructure projects.

In order for Malaysia to improve the liveability of her cies, soluons like sponge city, IoT-oriented waste bin could offer immediate soluons to many of our environmental

challenges. The adopon of renewable energies should be encouraged at all levels in efforts to build more resilient and sustainable cies.
