How sustainable is your chemistry? Effective and useful tools to impact decisions when designing chemical processes Isamir Martinez 1 , Dan Bailey 2 , Philippa Payne 3 1 ACS Green Chemistry Institute, USA, 2 Takeda, USA, 3 Gilead, USA The ACS Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) and the pharmaceutical industry are collaborating to advance and facilitate the implementation of research, development, and commercialization of greener chemistries. To catalyze tangible green and sustainable chemistry and engineering innovation, the member companies of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable (ACS GCIPR) have identified, designed, and deeply examined a unique toolbox that includes an array of commonly agreed-upon metrics and tools, widely used by the industry while designing their processes. This presentation will discuss the development and effective use of these tools, such as the Reagent Guides, the interactive Solvent Selection guides, the AMGS Calculator, and the Biocatalysis Guide along with tools to examine the prospective and perspective Process Mass Intensity (PMI) of a synthetic route will be presented. Furthermore, examples of benchmarking pharmaceutical processes will be highlighted as well as the introduction of current tools in development. This powerful resource, publicly available at: www.acsgcipr.org/tools-for-innovation-in- chemistry/ could be utilized by scientists and engineers in pharma and other industries, researchers, educators, and students.
