Silver nanoparticles loaded into polystyrene@poly (N-isopropylmethacrylamide) core-shell microgels for catalytic degradation of congo red dye Robina Begum University of the Punjab, Pakistan Metal nanoparticles stabilized in polymer microgels have gained much attention for their use in catalysis. 1-3 Here in, seed mediated emulsion polymerization method was used for the preparation of core-shell microgel particles consisting of unresponsive polystyrene core and thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) shell. Core-shell polymer particles were used for the fabrication of silver nanoparticles through in situ chemical reduction method by using bottom-up approach. Sodium borohydride was used to reduce silver nitrate into silver nanoparticles within the core-shell microgel dispersion. Polystyrene seed particles, polystyrene@poly(N- isopropylmethacrylamide) core-shell microgel particles and Ag-polystyrene@poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) hybrid microgel particles were characterized by suitable techniques. Catalytic efficiency of the hybrid core- shell microgel particles towards degradation of congo red dye was investigated in the presence of various concentrations of sodium borohydride, congo red and Ag-polystyrene@poly(N-isopropyl methacrylamide) particles. Rate constant dependence upon sodium borohydride concentration and congo red dye concentration indicated that Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism has been followed by the catalytic degradation of dye in the presence of Ag-polystyrene@poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) hybrid microgel particles. Mechanism of degradation of congo red by using polystyrene@poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) core-shell hybrid particles as a catalyst was explored for further development in this area. References 1.
