Kim Seymour has been elected Vice Chair of the Post-partum Special Interest Group (PPSIG) of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Section on Women’s Health (SOWH). She will be working directly with a team of 3 other physical therapists across the country who hold positions as Chair, Vice President, and Secretary.

I was able to schedule appointments that worked with my complicated schedule and I always felt I was in the best hands. “Everyone at Whole Body Health Physical Therapy is warm, welcoming and professional. I was able to schedule appointments that worked with my complicated schedule and I always felt I was in the best hands. My physical therapist, Justine, really got to know me and my body and incorporated my yoga practice into my therapy. I highly recommend Whole Body Health!!" – Anne W.

Kim’s personal mission for the group is help make postpartum physical therapy accessible to all women and part of standard care, just as a 6 week check-up is considered standard care. For example, in France, all women receive a minimum of 6 weeks of postpartum physical therapy care as part of standard practice. In her opinion, our current healthcare system is falling short. There are approximately 4 million new moms every year in the United States and very few of them receive post-partum care from a physical therapist, partially because there are not a lot of physical therapists that specialize in postpartum care, but also because it is not considered part of standard care. Physical therapists can help all mothers following birth to regain the strength of their pelvic floor muscles, eliminate or prevent incontinence, eliminate or prevent chronic pelvic and back pain, eliminate or prevent incontinence, improve posture (especially if breastfeeding), safely return to exercise and regain strength, and much more. Kim will be traveling to Washington D.C. in January for additional meetings and will be participating in regular conference calls to help shape the mission and develop strategies for improving postpartum care for all moms in the United States.
