What did He promise regarding the preservation of the nation during all their persecution and tribulation? v. 30. The word here translated “genera­ tion” means “race.” “That very generation would -not have passed when, 40 years later, the Jewish nation was crushed, and the Mosaic dispensation rendered impos­ sible. But genea also means race, and the Jewish race shall last till the end of all things.”—Farrar. Other nations have come and gone in the changing history of the world, but the Jew is still here, as Jesus said he should be. V . C on cern in g H is A n o in tin g by M ary, 14:1-9. This incident really preceded the teach­ ings of the last chapter, and is narrated out of order by Mark. It occurred at Bethany the previous Saturday evening. Who are mentioned, here ' as plotting to kill Jésus? How did they go about it? Why? Where did Jesus find friends? In whose house was He when He was anointed? What was He there for? May Simon have been one of the lepers whom Jesus had healed? Who anointed Him? Cp. John 12:3. What should her kindness to Jesus have won for her from His dis­ ciples? Did it? Who grumbled about it? What was suggested as a better use for the money that the ointment cost? Was Judas honest in wanting the money for the poor, or was it for poor Judas? John 12:6. Who took Mary’s part? How did He defend her? Do we just as truly owe a token of love to our loved ones as to the poor? Mark 9 :36, 37, 41. What did He say she had done? v. 8. What did He say should be done concerning her deed? Has He kept His promise to her? Mary did “what she could.” What could you do for the Lord'Jesus and the spreading of His Gos­ pel that you are not now doing? Will you begin today to do what you can?

What sign did He say should precede that tribulation? See Dan. 11:31. That our Lord announces this as still future proves conclusively that the profanation of the temple by the Syrian king, Antiochus Epiphanes, did not exhaust nor fulfill the prophecy. It is to be fulfilled by the Antichrist, of whom Antiochus Epiphanes was the type. Cp. Rev. 13:13-17. What did He warn them about deceivers who should arise in those days? What act of mercy did He promise that God would show the “elect?” By “elect” here is meant the godly remnant among the Jews at that time. IV . C on cern in g H is Ow n R e tu rn , vv. 24- 3 6 .
