1. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 . And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 3 . And they said among them- selves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 . And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it Was very great. 5 . And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 . And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen, he
is not here : behold the place where they laid him. 7 . But go your way, tell his dis ciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto fou. 8 . And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. 9 . Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 . And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 . And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. Hunter. real difficulty or an imaginary one? Did they let the difficulty stop them or did they go-on? What impelled them to go on? When they came to the tomb, what did they see? Who had rolled it away? See Matt. 28:2. When we, like the women, are in the performance of duty, what will we find about our difficulties? III. T h e A ngel M essenger, v erse 5. At finding the stone rolled away, what did the women do ? What did they expect to find? Was it natural they should think so? What did they find? Does it say here that he was “an angel?” Cp. Matthew 28:2. Do we usually think of angels as being men or women? What effect had the presence of this young man on the women?. How do you think you would have felt ? •Are angels real beings ? By J. H. INTRODUCTION. It is usually under- stood that our Lord was crucified on 'Friday, though some Bible scholars hold that it was on Thursday. The teacher would do 'well to have the class try to realize the frame of mind and state of heart fn which the disciples were when they saw the stone rolled to the door of the tomb that seemed'to hold the failure of all their hopes. I. T h e L oving H e a rt of W om en, verses 1 , 2 . What were their names? How did they show their love for Jesus? When did they go ‘to the tomb to do this? Why had it not been done before He was buried ? Was it a pleasant errand to go on at that early morning hour? What made these three women so brave? Should we ever be afraid of the dead?. What time did they get to the tomb ? II. T h e V anished D ifficulties, verses 3, 4. What were the women perplexed about as they walked to the tomb? Was it a
