Wednesday 8.07 a.m. February already. January was a game of two halves, the first half slow, the remainder just flashed by. Which is what this train wasn’t exactly doing due to a points failure. I finished the crossword and put down the newspaper. At the end of January, we had completed the first round of vendor presentations for the HR & payroll system. Of the
five, two failed to meet the requirement on a couple of the scenarios. Sarah (Head of payroll) had concerns over a third as some demonstrated a rather ‘clunky’ way of producing some of the specimen calculations we’d asked to be shown. The remaining two could certainly do the job and there wasn’t a lot to choose between them on features and cost. We decided to call them back for a second
and final discussion to go over a few points, but mainly to discuss in detail the project approach, the resources needed and what would happen beyond implementation. My experience told me that sometimes something like chemistry could prove the deciding factor in what looked like a standoff. We’d set aside two dates after mid-February for those meetings. Which then reminded me that
