Alcoholism—What is It? By Dr. R. B. Brown* A LCOHOL is a poison to the nervous system. The solubility of alcohol in nerve cell. Dr. Robert Fleming, one of the authorities at the U. N.-sponsored, seven-nation conference held at Geneva, Switzerland, said, “ Most alcoholics are not psychiatric cases; they are normal people.” Alcoholism is a national menace. The average consumption of alcohol in the United States is more than 20 gallons per person per year. There are sixty million drinkers, four million excessive drinkers, and one million alcoholics in the U.S.A. alone. One billion man-hours per year are sacrificed to alcohol (this equals the loss of 500,000 laborers per year). Liquor cost America twelve and one-half billion dollars last year. There are 482,000 dispensing places. Alcoholism is the most destructive of all diseases. Alcohol is, in the opinion of a Western auto insurance company, responsible for 30% of all losses paid by casualty companies. Judge Harlan M. Calhoun of West Virginia states: “ At least 50% of crim inal law violations in our courts relate in some way to liquor. Liquor consti tutes the greatest curse of civilization next to war.” Dr. Clinton Howard de clares: “ Modern science says man is sick; God says he is a sinner. Man says he is an alcoholic; God says he is a drunkard and that no drunkard shall inherit the kingdom of God. There is a complete and permanent cure, the blood cure: ‘The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanseth us from all sin.’ ” *Pastor of the First United Presby terian Church, Everett, Washington. can never save us. Moral purity is a matter of the heart and soul, and not of the intellect. The ancient Greeks reached the highest pinnacle of learning and philosophy, which philosophies are still studied today. Yet noble Greece went to her Tuin on the rocks of lustful immorality. Rome conquered the world and gave to the world municipal gov ernment and laws of justice, yet power ful Rome fell. And a major factor caus ing her fall was infidelity in the home, concubinage, and sexual immorality. In contrast to these pictures, true godly Christians in every century have risen to pure morals, happy lives, godly homes, noble churches; and helpful com munities. Sexual lust is a mark of low est heathenism. I am of the strong conviction that American parents and American youth should be called back to God; back to the Bible and back to pure godly homes.
