Spirit. (See Zech. 4:6). Then, too, the “ voice” of the Father upon this occa sion suggests Heaven’s interest in all that Christ came to accomplish. This is the first time this voice from Heaven had been heard since the giving of the law at Sinai. Both were significant and solemn events. The voice at the baptism indicates that the entire ministry of redemption which the Son will work out will have the divine pleasure resting upon it. Jesus’ Temptations 4:1-11, 17 Then is an important word here. It indicates the time when Jesus’ tempta tion took place. It was close to the period of great blessing. It was first the mountaintop and then the deep val ley. It is often so in the lives of God’s children. Frequently times of great spiritual blessing are followed by expe riences of severe testing. Attention needs to be fixed also upon the fact that the “ devil” is a mighty enemy. He was not afraid to attack even the Lord Jesus Christ. This is he whom every believer has to reckon with in the Christian conflict. The devil goes about “ as a roaring lion” (1 Pet. 5:8) seeking whom he may devour. Let no Christian think he will he exempt from his attacks nor that he can vanquish him in his own strength. We must all heed the injunction of Ephesians 6:10-18. Victory came to the Lord Jesus through the use of the Word. Each temptation was resisted by an “ It is written.” This shows conclusively the importance of having the Word of God hidden in the heart. Such as these have the means of victory in their grasp. In His threefold temptation, Jesus was tempted (1) to doubt the goodness of God (3 ,4 ), (2) to presume upon the care of God (5-7), and to avoid the way T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

We take up now the study of the Gospel of Matthew. This series of les sons will continue for two quarters. The series does not begin, however, with the first two chapters since they will be studied on the two Sundays before and after Christmas. This first lesson pre sents Jesus in His preparation for His public ministry. We see Him in full dedication to the task for which He came into the world. Jesus’ Baptism 3:16,17 The submission of Jesus to baptism by John marks the beginning of His public ministry. Thus He identified Him self with sinners for whose salvation Jesus came into the world to minister. His baptism was a part of that which He came to do for others. Of this we may be sure, He did not need baptism for Himself. He had no sin of which to repent. But, as when He hung upon the cross He had no sin of His own for which He needed to die but became identified with those who were sinners, so now at the Jordan He experienced baptism for the sake of others. Note well the fact that in Jesus’ bap tism all three persons of the Godhead were present. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove, the Father spoke, and the Son was the center of the experience. This fact serves to emphasize the im portance of the ministry of Christ. As Bishop Ryle has said, “ It was the whole Trinity, which at the beginning of crea tion said, “ let us make man.” It was the whole Trinity again, which at the be ginning of the Gospel seemed to say, “let us save man.” We should also note well that the Spirit was manifested at the very be ginning of Christ’s ministry. He never left Him. No one who accomplishes any thing worth-while for God does it apart from the energy of the same Holy
