Each “blessed” in this section reflects some characteristic of the saved. Such realize their poverty of spirit and rest altogether in the merit of the Son of God (v. 3). They sorrow for sin and turn to the God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:4). They are meek like their Master and will one day be richly rewarded (v. 5). Humility is no sign of weakness. It is one of the mightiest forces for God and righteousness in the world. The true subjects of the Kingdom continually are hungering and thirsting after righteous ness and are likewise continually being filled (v. 6). This is one of the sure signs one is “born of God.” The true Christian has a heart of compassion (v. 7). His heart has been cleansed by the blood of Christ and delights in the presence of God (v. 8). He has found true peace and delights to propagate it (v. 9) and is not ashamed or afraid to suffer for Christ’s sake (vv. 10-12). Everyone wants to be happy! Some people think that if they had much money or a new house, or if they be came famous they would be truly happy. God’s Word tells us the ONLY way that one may be truly happy. Those who are children of God because they have re ceived the Lord Jesus Christ as their own Saviour are the only ones who are really happy in life. God wants His children to be happy; He does not want them to be complaining and unhappy. One day the Lord Jesus talked to a great multitude of people and gave to them some rules for being happy. Would you like to know what these rules are so that you may follow them? Read Mat thew 5:1-16. Each time you see the word blessed read instead truly happy. The Lord Jesus said that those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” shall be truly happy. Do you love to go to God’s house and to hear God’s Word and to pray? If you do, you will be truly Helps for the Children Happy Ways of Living Matt. 5-1-16 Memory Verse: “ Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Luke 11:28).

happy. He said that those who were merciful and meek and peacemakers would be truly happy. Do you often start fights; are you a boy or a girl who always is “ standing up for your rights” ? God says to be kind and to be a peacemaker and you will be truly happy. Do you ask the Lord Jesus to keep your heart and your thoughts and your words and actions pure? If you do, the Lord Jesus said that you will be truly happy. God’s Word says that even when others say unkind things about you because you are living for the Lord Jesus you will be happy! Usually we are unhappy when others make fun of us, but if we are teased for His sake, our reward will be great in Heaven. Surely this should make us truly happy! The Saviour said that those who belong to Him are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. His children are not to be ashamed of Him and of His Word. They are to let their light shine brightly for Him that others might want to know Him too. Another time the Lord Jesus said, “ Blessed are they that hear the Word of God and keep it.” When we read the rules in His Book and trust Him for the strength to obey these rules, we shall be truly happy. Oct. 19, 1952 JESUS DEMANDS SINCERITY There are lessons of great practical value in today’s portions of Scripture for God’s people in any age or dispensa tion. If we consider the Sermon on the Mount as belonging to the old covenant primarily, it still remains that the teach ing here is applicable for believers in the present dispensation. We know this to be true because the great truths set forth in, these Scriptifres are also sounded out in the Epistles of the New Testament. A Principle Emphasized 6:1 The first verse in our lesson gives warning against ostentatious action on the part of the followers of the Lord. It is a caution against giving the “green light” to the flesh. Making a display, gaining the applause or approval of men appeals to the natural man. The born-again man is to be concerned about pleasing the Lord. The word “ alms” which so appears in the King James version is translated “ righteousness” in the Revision. The latter is the more likely rendering. The thought of Jesus here is that His followers should engage in righteous acts in order to please the Father in Heaven. They who do right eous acts to be seen of men already have their reward in the form of men’s ap proval. Thus they should not expect to receive any reward from the Father. The Principle Illustrated 6:2-8, 16-18 In the verses which follow, our Lord graphically illustrates what He means Matt. 6:1-8, 16-18, 22-24 Pointers on the Lesson
