INSPIRING STORY
“I was barely surviving, in constant terror with absolutely no ability to rest or relax.”
the journey i ’ m on Catherine shares her story
My beautiful mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and passed away in 2006, aged only 59. A few years later I started on a course of antidepressants, as my mother’s passing took an emotional toll on me. She was my best friend. In 2017 I moved from Adelaide to Cairns to start a new life. I had a new job, new friends, was studying and feeling really happy within myself. But in June 2018 my whole world changed when I was suddenly diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. This was the same illness that took my mother from me. When I was initially diagnosed, I felt very confident that I was going to beat it and move through treatment with a positive outlook. I weighed out my treatment options and decided to go down the path of chemo, lumpectomy and radiation. I experienced many side effects from chemo; insomnia being the first one. To treat my insomnia, I was put on a benzodiazepine called Lorazepam. Then I was prescribed Lyrica for my peripheral neuropathy, which felt like my shins were being drilled into. It was such excruciating pain. I was told that these drugs were safe and I only took the daily amount prescribed. I was also put on various other drugs, including Endone and Oxycontin.
