Artist Stephen Doyle shared his excitement for the project, “I’m so delighted to get this opportunity to make something of significance for the LGBTQ+ community with the Glucksman and Cork Pride. This is such a unique residency, we’ll get to share our experiences and concerns and it will be treasured rather than dismissed. That feels like progress.” The creative consultations at the Glucksman which will take place throughout July will include a variety of activities for participants, including art making, writing, and photography workshops, together with talks from invited speakers and facilitated discussions. The creative material generated by the community members in these sessions will be exhibited at the museum during this year’s Cork LGBT+ Pride Festival, which takes place from 24th July-1st August.
This summer, the Cork LGBT+ Pride Festival have partnered with the Glucksman art museum in University College Cork to invite members of Cork’s LGBT+ community to participate in a creative project. The community led project will include the commissioning of the inaugural Cork Pride Artist in Residence, Stephen Doyle, to create a new artwork for the UCC Art Collection. Through a series of creative consultations at the Glucksman, the LGBT+ community will inspire the Artist in Residence by sharing memories and experiences around their sexual and gender identities, mental health, rural isolation, desexualisation of the older community, the challenges and supports of their life in Cork, and ideas on the impact of legislative changes in altering attitudes and improving opportunities.
Director of the Glucksman, Professor Fiona Kearney said, “The Glucksman has been fortunate to collaborate on a number of events in partnership with our LGBTQ+ UCC colleagues and students, so I am delighted to have the opportunity now to work with the Cork Pride Festival, and in particular to engage artist Stephen Doyle to co-create a new commission for the UCC Art Collection that will reflect and celebrate the views of the wider LGBTQ+ community in Cork.” The commissioned artwork, which forms part of Cork Pride’s Artist in Residence programme, will capture the thoughts, experiences and ideas of the LGBT+ community and will be unveiled at the museum at the 2022 Cork LGBT+ Pride Festival, before being toured regionally as part of the Glucksman’s Art Library initiative, a new loan collection which places artworks in public and community venues. The artwork will be accompanied by educational resources that will be designed to encourage creative engagement with people of all ages.
In the words of Elliot Eisner, a renowned Professor of Arts and Education, who dedicated his life to researching the impact of the arts on people. “Art can truly move us, it can lead us to experiences that challenge our ways of thinking, question our capacities and sensibilities, and allow us the opportunity to recognize with the creator or idea being conveyed.” The Cork Pride Art Project will connect audiences of all ages and from all backgrounds to the stories, memories and experiences of the Cork LGBT+ community and to new and exciting visual arts experiences. The Cork Pride Art Project is joint initiative between the Cork LGBT+ Pride Festival and the Glucksman, and is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and private philanthropy through Cork University Foundation.
