I returned to Boston Scientific Cork after 8.5 years, having left in 2012 and I have to say it felt like coming home. When I was considering returning, I had no doubt that I would feel comfortable in the workplace. I didn’t have to think twice about how I would fit in or if I would be accepted as my true self. In fact knowing I would be accepted for who I am was a big factor in making the decision to come back. Returning in 2021 it is obvious that BSC is taking its responsibility to be an inclusive, diverse and equitable employer very seriously. As I have settled in over the last three months, how I see people treating each other and supporting each other has confirmed that I made the right decision to return. Here’s to many more happy years as part of the BSC family and to making more friends for life along the way!
I joined PRIDE as I wanted to educate myself on how to better support family and friends. Working towards a better future for my younger relatives, ensuring there will be companies that will welcome them for who they are and what they can contribute by bringing their whole, true self to work. There is a real energy within the Boston Scientific Cork PRIDE ERG to highlight how open and diverse the work environment is in BSC Cork. We are continuously building on our foundations to be the best we can be. I love the fact that being a member of the PRIDE ERG in Cork allows me to learn, laugh and become a better ally to all.

The reason I joined PRIDE ERG was to show our employees that Boston Scientific is an inclusive company and that it’s a safe space to ‘Be Yourself’. Being part of the PRIDE ERG has meant a lot to me, as it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me achieved PRIDE in myself. My highlight so far was to walk on site in 2015 and see the rainbow flag flying for the first time, I felt like I belonged at Boston Scientific.
Pride to me stands for family & feeling at home. For so long I used to be nervous about being looked at differently or judged for simply being me and loving the “wrong” person. I walk down the corridor in Boston Scientific with my head held high, why? Because the people there make me feel at home & it is like a little family. Yes, we save lives everyday through the medical device products we manufacture, but the people of Boston Scientific with their open minds and non-judgemental attitudes positively impact more lives that they realise!
PRIDE in Boston Scientific (BSC) is about ensuring we can bring our whole selves to work. Many of us have experienced working in a company where we hide who we are, and it can be very difficult. I started working in BSC in 2017 and it didn’t take long to realise I didn’t have to hide who I truly am. I have regular conversations about my partner and our children with my colleagues. In 2021 I took on the Cork Chapter lead role of the PRIDE Employee Resource Group and we are focusing on empowering our employees to bring their whole self to work. We are rolling out training on how language and behaviour can impact an employee/ family member or friend who is struggling with their own sexuality. Another area of focus for us is on empowering our employees to bring their whole self to work. We recently launched our new PRIDE bench at the employee entrance as a reminder to all To Be Yourself. The new Progressive PRIDE flag is proudly flying at the Cork site for the month of June.
As sponsor of the PRIDE ERG Cork chapter for 2021, I am humbled to be part of a team that is energised to engage and educate our colleagues on PRIDE and the LGBTQ+ community. One of the priorities for leadership here in the Model Farm Road is to ensure everybody feels and experiences Boston as an inclusive place to work, a place where everybody feels comfortable being themselves. Our PRIDE ERG is key to achieving this goal. I am motivated to support PRIDE as respect and inclusion form part of my core values. As a leader it is my privilege and responsibility to champion and influence positively where I can. With many of my dearest family and friends in the LBGT+ community, PRIDE is a natural fit for me as an active ally.
