ECOC 2021 MARKET FOCUS AWARDS

ECOC EXHIBITION 2021 INDUSTRY AWARDS FULL LIST OF WINNERS

Winners of the ECOC 2021 awards were announced on 14th September at the ECOC 2021 Expo in Bordeaux. The awards emphasise technology and product commercialisation; they highlight significant achievements in advancing the business of optical communications, transport, networking, fibre-based products, photonic integration circuits and related developments. The Market Focus committee reviewed the progress of advanced technologies from research to commercialisation including volume production as well as new and innovative products. Congratulations to the this year’s winners:

programmable solutions. So this is a perfect example of bold hardware innovation. And this year, we entered the ECOC awards to highlight the impact of our innovation in software automation. And we’re very excited to have one with our liquid spectrum analytics applications that are being used in over 90 customer networks.” See the full interview with Paulina Gomez here. BEST FIBRE/FIBRE COMPONENT PRODUCT Winner: Product: NANF Hollow core fibre Tony Pearson, Lumenisity’s vice president, sales and marketing commented, “The specific thing about NANF is that it has all the properties of hollowcore, but it additionally has some properties that are unique to the structure. It offers not only the lower latency, but a very broad spectral range to operate in. It is a field deployable solution, so one of the things that we focused on is making it a cable that can be deployed using the existing techniques that are used for single mode fibre deployment. Longer term, with this focus on both dynamic range performance and a reduction in nonlinear reality, then folks like the hyperscalers can take advantage of that for a geographic expansion. With separation between data centres of one and a half the distance, so over two times the geographic footprint so it’s a very exciting innovation. It has all the benefits that people are already aware of with hollow core, but has some additional benefits.” See the full interview with Tony Pearson here. The ECOC Exhibition Awards are run in conjunction with Optical Connections magazine and judged by the ECOC Market Focus Committee.

Winner: Product: OIF Type (2) IC-TROSA Sanjay Parthasarathi, chief marketing officer at II-VI said, “We are very pleased with the award. We come to ECOC to showcase products and innovations and when they get recognised, we are especially pleased and excited. Thank you very much. We were the first to the market with an IC TROSA product. It’s a completely integrated on our indium phosphide technology platform. So we can make it very tiny. So it goes into little packages, including QSF P Diddy. And another differentiator is our output power. It’s the highest in the industry at zero dBm output power. And that opens up a whole bunch of applications for our end customers. These include direct to router- to-router length, to point-to-point up to 80 kilometres and 40 kilometre ROADM, so it saves them both capex as well as operating expenses, so it’s a big win for our customers.” See the full interview with Sanjay Parthasarathi here. OPTICAL TRANSPORT AWARD Winner: Product: Liquid Spectrum Paulina Gomez, Ciena’s advisor for portfolio marketing said, “Thank you very much [for the award]. Ciena is a leader with a proven track record for delivering coherent optical solutions that drive innovation, but also power the top service provider networks across the globe. We recognise ECOC as a place for knowledge sharing and collaboration, but also one that steers innovation in our industry. And last year, we were lucky to win with Wave logic five extreme, the industry’s first 800 Gig

Winner: Product: 800GOSFP &QSFP-DD Pluggable Solutions Accepting the award, Frank Chang, chief engineer at SourcePhotonics said, “I’d like to thank Zico and the award selection committee for recognising SourcePhotonics for this major data centre innovation best product award. I do know that data centre is such a broad category, and so this award is very significant. SourcePhotonics is a global industry leader for optical transceivers with a proven track record to deliver innovative and reliable optical solutions to the data centre space for over a decade. This nomination highlights our latest family of industry leading 800G OSFP and QSFP-DD products. The company have leveraged a global vertically integrated business model and expertise to produce multiple industry first commercial products in optical design that has driven a year-over-year reduction in power consumption.” The full interview with Frank Chang is available here. OPTICAL INTEGRATION AWARD

Winner:

Michael Lebby, CEO, Lightwave Logic “What this represents is a third-party review of our technology platform. We’re doing electro-optic polymers and we’re integrating that with silicon photonics and other integrated photonics platforms. In fact, that’s being called hybrid PICs, hybrid photonic integrated circuits. And what that does is it boosts the performance of integrated photonics platforms. It’s great to receive this award.” Michael Lebby’s interview is available here.
