Barstow Unified Approves New Math Curriculum for K–8

The Barstow Unified School District Board of Education approved a new math curriculum, HMH’s California Into Math , for K–8 students on March 10, 2026. This six-year program will launch in the 2026–2027 school year. The adoption followed a careful, multi-step process beginning with state-level approval by the California Department of Education (CDE) and the State Board of Education.

BUSD's district-level review involved a collaborative committee of educators and specialists.

They:

Identified district needs.

● Evaluated materials against state standards and frameworks. ● Reviewed social content standards. ● Piloted the materials in classrooms. The committee, which included diverse educators supporting all learners (including English learners and students with disabilities), recommended California Into Math after months of review and testing.

This new program is designed to help students:

Build strong problem-solving skills.

● ● ● ●

Understand mathematical reasoning, not just solutions.

Connect math to real life. Boost confidence and curiosity.

Students will engage with hands-on activities, discussions, visual models, and technology.

Teachers will receive professional development and training before the 2026–2027 launch to ensure a smooth transition. BUSD is enthusiastic about this new chapter in math education, aiming to equip every student with skills for school, careers, and daily life.

When and how to contact the School Board You should contact the school board when you have concerns or questions about the district’s policies, budget, school programs, or safety issues. It's also a good idea to reach out if you want to participate in public meetings, share ideas, or provide feedback about your child’s school. For specific personal issues, like student discipline or individual school matters, it's often best to first contact the school or district administration.
