A culture focused on the personal development of staff, and achieving a high level of technical expertise, has paid dividends for Heron Bros Ltd (HBL). The panel was particularly struck by how HBL has created a truly integrated team, with support staff and front-line site operatives regarded as equally essential. All team members work towards the same objective of delivering an excellent service to clients. An award-winning construction and property development company founded in 1956, HBL identifies its core values as relationships, passion and forward thinking. Believing its people are its greatest asset, HBL thanks its staff for making the company a great place to work and values their commitment to ongoing training and learning. This shared desire for continuous growth underpins the company’s success and creates an environment where every individual can thrive. The family firm was the first UK contractor to achieve IIP Platinum status, an accreditation it has held since 2016, and is consistently recognised as a leading employer, with accolades including IIP Global Employer of the Year, IIP UK Employer of the Year and Business in the Community Employer of Choice. of technical development within its workforce. Adopting a wrap-around approach to training and
development, BSG is enhancing the technical and leadership skills of its workforce and supporting organisational growth. It has embedded a culture of learning spanning technical upskilling, digital competence, health and wellbeing and sustainability. A dedicated learning & development manager, alongside active involvement from senior leaders including the CEO and COO, reflects strong top-down commitment. Judges commended BSG’s use of technology to support active learning within the workforce, including virtual reality and SketchUp animations for aiding safety awareness, quizzes to reinforce learning and the use of videos for safety topics to ensure high engagement and retention of information. Cybersecurity and digital tools such as GPS surveying and 3D scanning further build future-ready competencies. Stand-down days and a structured training schedule prioritise H&S and continuous improvement, with tailored content driven by audits, appraisals and anonymous surveys. Wellbeing is a cornerstone, with initiatives covering silica exposure, skin protection, mental health and even seasonal stressors. BSG’s comprehensive and evolving training programme not only enhances performance but also fosters a resilient, knowledgeable and future-proof workforce.
