SUSTAINABLE COMPANY OF THE YEAR WINNER: AG WILSON LTD

SUSTAINABLE COMPANY OF THE YEAR HIGHLY COMMENDED: HERON BROS

For a relatively small company, AG Wilson’s commitment to sustainability was deemed by the judging panel to pack a punch. Clear evidence was presented of environmental excellence across company operations, driven by a dedicated senior leadership team. For the Carlingford Lough Greenway project, AG Wilson repurposed 570 steel piles, achieving a 98.3% reduction in embodied carbon compared to new fabrication. Diesel generators were eliminated by using mains power, sourcing materials locally and using soft-start piling to reduce acoustic disturbance to marine wildlife. A signatory to the NI Climate Action Pledge, AG Wilson has invested in battery- powered generators (Hushh Pods), digital transformation and fleet rationalisation as part of its roadmap to net zero.

With an ambitious plan in place to achieve net zero five years ahead of the UK target, Heron Bros’ sustainability credentials impressed judges. Senior leadership team commitment was evidenced in the contractor’s Vision 2030 Net Zero Roadmap setting a target of net zero across all company operations by 2045. A software package to measure and record embedded Scope 3 carbon emissions throughout all stages of construction projects will enable the company to target and reduce emissions on an ongoing basis to meet its target. Certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 50,0001 Energy Management further demonstrate its commitment to sustainability across all levels of the organisation.
