EDUCATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR HIGHLY COMMENDED: FELIX O’HARE, NIFRS LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT COLLEGE, COOKSTOWN Deemed an exceptionally strong contender in the education category, NIFRS Learning & Development College secured highly commended recognition for Felix O’Hare. A project of huge ambition and complexity, it has delivered a wide range of world-class training facilities from flood water rescue and collapsed building simulations to a call-out village and academic centre, all designed to prepare firefighters for real-life emergencies. Built to BREEAM Excellent standards and recognised as an exemplar of health and safety best practice, it stands as a groundbreaking development that will have a lasting impact on fire and rescue provision across Northern Ireland.
HEALTH PROJECT OF THE YEAR WINNER: FLYNN, BELFAST CITY HOSPITAL BMU FLYNN impressed judges with its creative design and technical solutions behind delivering unique and complex engineering works in a live healthcare environment. Showcasing its technical expertise, teamwork and strong focus on quality and safety, the new Building Maintenance Unit (BMU) enhances the efficiency and safety of building maintenance and hospital operations and ensures vital services remain uninterrupted. In partnership with the Belfast Trust, FLYNN replaced a critical piece of equipment which had been out of action for nearly a decade. All materials and plant had to be craned up the outside of the hospital to the roof level, which is 80 metres above ground level. The installation surpasses all safety and accessibility standards, futureproofing façade maintenance for years to come.
