NISG NEWS
RECENT ACTIVITY HOSTED BY THE NORTHERN IRELAND SAFETY GROUP HAS INCLUDED AN INFORMATIVE PRESENTATION BY UU AND SITE VISIT TO INDUSTRY TRAINING SERVICES IN PORTADOWN…
An engaging presentation, From Incident to Action: A New Era of Health, Safety and Wellbeing at Ulster University, drew a packed audience at CITBNI on August 18 for a recent meeting of the Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISG). Speakers included NISG Public Relations Officer/UU Health and Safety Lead James Fenton, and UU Health and Safety Partner Emma Hasley. The speakers shared UU’s recent H&S journey, a framework designed to deliver enhanced, measurable procedures embraced at every level of the organisation. This robust approach reflects the university’s commitment to excellence, further recognised by its award of UK and Ireland University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2024. A Back-to-Basics strategy was adopted to ensure that all employees clearly understood their responsibilities in managing health, safety and wellbeing (HSW). An interactive workshop explored responsibilities across the five tiers of management, while a ‘pause and re- align’ exercise helped reset attitudes, encouraging a cultural shift towards Ulster University’s health, safety and wellbeing journey

stronger risk awareness and proactive management. Building on this, the UU H&S Team developed a Management Guide and Self-Audit Checklist, supported by an aligned audit programme. This represents a significant step forward in assurance, risk reduction and leadership accountability across the university. The presentation concluded with a lively Q&A session, with many NISG members seeking to identify lessons they could adapt for their own organisations.
NISG continues to provide members with valuable opportunities for learning and discussion through monthly meetings, workshops and its annual conference. The 2025 NISG Conference, Health and Safety for All, will take place on November 6 at La Mon Hotel, Belfast. For more details about NISG or to register for the conference, the accompanying H&S exhibition or the evening NISG Awards Dinner, please contact Nicola McCracken, NISG Secretary, at info@nisg.org.uk
NISG visits Industry Training Services in Portadown
Around 60 members of NISG visited Industry Training Services (ITS) in Portadown for an emergency response presentation and demonstration on September 15. ITS owner Brendan Crealey and his team provided valuable insight into real-world emergency-response applications relevant across all sectors of employment. Attendees observed live demonstrations covering confined space rescue, live firefighting and chemical/ hazardous materials response and
discussed various first aid scenarios. Participants also had the unique opportunity to explore the tunnels of ITS’ state-of-the-art mobile confined space unit, which can be transported directly to workplaces to deliver on-site training. This highly engaging and interactive event showcased the importance of having a well-trained emergency response team in place, underlining how preparedness not only meets health and safety best practice but also ensures compliance with emergency response requirements.
NISG’s visit to ITS in Portadown included a hazardous material demo.
