Proactive planning, stakeholder engagement and flexibility have played a crucial role in Glasgiven Contract’s high- quality delivery of St Ronan’s College on time and to budget. Amalgamating three schools to create one post-primary campus with capacity for 1,800 pupils, the complex project represents the largest single-school build within the Northern Ireland Department of Education’s major capital programme. Located on the old site of St Michael’s Grammar School on Cornakinnegar Road, the new 20,000sqm college boasts a three-storey building featuring inspiring classroom spaces, double-height dining areas, school meals accommodation and administrative services. Both students and the local community will have access to the standalone sports pavilion’s fitness suite, sports hall, GAA and football pitches and tennis courts,
as well as music department and drama facilities and design and technology workshops. With the complex design-and-build contract specifying compliance with BIM Level 2 and the Department of Education Building Handbook, efficient co-ordination of the supply chain and programme was critical. Emmett Teggart, Project Director, says, “The project faced significant challenges from the outset due to the complexity of planned utility installations. Unknown existing services intersected the works areas, leading to unplanned diversionary works which affected the co-ordination of on-site activities. To overcome this, parts of the works had to be rescheduled. “The scheme required extensive roadworks around the perimeter of the site. Interfaces with the local rail infrastructure demanded that strict
