“Both are very dedicated, providing a positive influence and always encouraging us to do our best. Our Teacher in Charge always brings fresh ideas and helps us fundraise for our trip to nationals.” Rory says that from a sporting viewpoint, “you need to be fitter than you may think” to play competitive volleyball. “I would certainly encourage anyone to get involved in College volleyball,” he says. “It’s great to be part of a team and build up your skills.” The College Senior A team members are: Nic Book, Alex Brett, Matthew Brett, Rory Doull, Christian Higgins, Justin Hodges, Hanjun Kim, Jeremy Kinley and Cameron McCarthy, with support from Year 10 student Jack Kennedy as a tournament referee. “ Winning the title was down to a combination of determination and a brotherhood of players who are passionate about playing – and winning. ” Rory Doull
“We lost to Boys’ High in the pool play, so to stage a big comeback for such a crucial game was very satisfying – especially against an old rival,” he says. “Winning the title was down to a combination of determination and a brotherhood of players who are passionate about playing – and winning. “I feel the team of seniors has really banded together with strong bonding. Many of us have played together since Year 10, so we are a tight unit and the younger ones have quickly come on board.” Rory believes the players have also powered up their game this season under the guidance of coach – and New Zealand representative – Nicky Pio, along with the support of Teacher in Charge Claire Nicolson.
stepped up this season, “blocking” all rivals to secure the division 2 title at the Mainland Senior School Championship in Christchurch. Captained by Rory Doull, the College team proved too strong in the semi-final, downing Christchurch Boys’ High School, 3–1, before beating Middleton Grange School in a hard-fought final, 3–2, at Cowles Stadium. The team produced some big hits and big blocks throughout the tournament. However, for Year 13 student Rory Doull, the semi-final victory was a highlight.
