Toy haulers have matured. There’s one for everyone. By Howard J Elmer
I remember the first toy haulers coming into the market just more than 20 years ago. At the time, they appeared as an answer to a need that for years RVers had been asking the manufacturers meet. The fact is, RVers have always had toys and the need to get them to the trailer. Manufacturers didn’t need to convince buyers that this was a good idea—they already lived this life—it just wasn’t very convenient hauling multiple trailers when just one would do. When these first units appeared, they were snapped up by the off-road, race related community that already used these machines as hobbies and also owned RVs. For others, who saw the possibilities in having a living and garage space all in one, they are the ones who quickly made these trailers a hit. In the beginning they started with just a loading door and garage space in a travel trailer (that was already a shell), they then quickly spread to 5th- wheels and motorized units, mostly Class Cs. Sizes quickly ramped up from smallish to well more than 40-feet. Soon the loading ramps morphed into suspended patios with bug screens and the garage
space doubled as a bedroom as fold-up coaches and suspended queen beds were added. Roof access created a viewing platform for those race events as well. Many even carried an auxiliary gas tank so toys could be re-fueled at the campground. Today, these units are as sophisticated as any on the market and have special off-grid solar arrays—and extra water and propane capacities— making them self-sufficient for long stays in the back country. Meanwhile they provide a home and transport for whatever toy you love. Here are three examples of a travel trailer, 5th-wheel, and a motorized unit. This is just a small cross- section of what’s available out there today. One thing is for sure—if you have a toy—the RV industry has a way for you to haul it.
