It’s hard to believe it’s only been a week since our thrilling Sports Day last Friday, despite the heat pupils tried their hardest and the cheering crowd could be heard across the school site! Well done to Seacole, just pipping Eliot by 14 points, as our overall house winners, ranking in the top two spots HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

across all year groups. You can read some of the highlights in our Sports Fixtures section and get a full breakdown in the termly School Magazine published at the end of term - only two weeks away now! Year 10 has been on work experience this week with placements at local schools, Sky TV, Google, The National Archives and even on a farm! I am sure they all had a rewarding week and are excited about future careers. On Wednesday we held our second Drop Down Day of the year. Year 7 had very weather appropriate Smoothie Making workshops, Year 8 learned life skills including self defence, water safety with the RNLI and first aid while Year 9 visited many of London’s top attractions from the V&A, London Zoo to the London Dungeons. Our remaining Sixth Formers also took part, holding their own Year 12 sports day! This week also saw 20 of Year 9 take part in a Theatre Outreach program, touring a play of ‘The Smeds and The Smoos’ to four local Primary schools. They performed for delighted audiences of Year 2 pupils. This Sunday our Chamber Choir will again be performing alongside Richmond Orchestra at the ‘Beyond the Skies’ Summer Concert. Tickets are still available for this spectacular event. Our end of year muscial celebration takes place next Thursday book your place for the Summer Festival now. We are delighted to have achieved the Attachment Aware Schools Gold Award, which was presented yesterday, to recognise our work on under- standing the impact of trauma on students’ learning and wellbeing. You can find out more about it through these videos: Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences & Their Impact on Youth The Importance of Seeing the Individual Child This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and it’s a good time to remind ourselves of the dangers of alcohol for young people, particularly as they may be planning end of year celebrations or going to events or festivals over the summer holidays etc. This fact sheet is really helpful, as is the Talk to FRANK guide to festivals. Finally the Anna Freud Centre are holding their final webinar of the year on Tuesday 8th July 12-1pm. ‘Supporting your young person with anxiety before they get their exam results’ will explore ways in which parents and carers can support their young person with feelings of anxiety before re- sults day. The webinar offers top tips from the Anna Freud Centre young champions and healthy coping strategies that can be used to support their own and their young person’s mental wellbeing. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

Last Friday was a fantastic final sports day for our Year 10s. They exceeded all expectations, breaking Waldegrave’s sporting records in four events and showing the rest of the school how loud team cheers can be! The house captains did an excellent job encouraging house spirit throughout the school. This week Year 10 have been on work experience. Hopefully they have found this really valuable, gaining an insight into the world of work and the careers they might want to pursue in the future. Congratulations to all students for completing their Year 10 exams. We know that many students found this challenging, but we do hope that the experience of being in the sports hall and doing assessments in timed conditions will really be helpful to them when they come to the real GCSEs. Students will start receiving feedback for this when they come back from work experience where subject teachers will be giving marks and ideas for how to improve in the future. We now have only two more weeks left of the summer term. Students are reminded of the importance of

continuing to work hard in their lessons so that they can

finish Year 10 on a high! Have a lovely weekend!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘King of Nothing’ by Nathanael Lessore

I really really really enjoyed this book! I specifically enjoyed how realistic and actually quite intense it was towards the end. The characters are all written so well. For example I really like how you can tell Anton is not as bad as Kehinde from the start when he kind of defended Mathew when Kehinde was about to give him a hard time. The scene where Mathew and Anton are at a sleepover and they’re talking about his nan made me cry! It was just so wholesome and the boys’ unexpected friendship is such a lovely part of the book. I will definitely suggest this book to people in the future!

Last Friday the sports fields were a sea of blue PE uniforms and the air was filled with cheers of encouragement for our annual Sports Day. Form classes had chosen their participants for the events during tutor times, with every student participating in at least one event and supporting their house. House points were awarded based on the placement of the participants and as you can see from the tables above it was a close contest, with only 207 points between the highest and lowest totals. The day began with Years 7 and 8 taking part in the amateur events including egg and spoon, sack and skipping races as well as more traditional track and field events. Highlights included Year 7 and 8 breaking Waldegrave records across the 800m B! After morning break Year 9 and 10 competitors took their turns with a further seven records broken, many of which were by our field participants. In the afternoon competitors took part in the 100m, 200m and relay track events and as the whole school gathered on the fields the cheering came to a crescendo! There were two more records broken by the Year 7s but the biggest excitement came as the staff limbered up for their relay race. PE retained their title as staff relay champions for the fifth year running but Maths and Science fought hard for the silver with Mr Reynolds securing second place with his sprint. It was a wonderful day for all and left everyone full of school spirit!
