THE FELLSIDE WAY WITH GLENNY

you let them out round at your loft so that they come back in when you call them in. Feed them plenty once their in and vacci- nate all your youngsters all at the same time together if possible. I put a bit of straw down in the corner of my loft when I put the youngsters in the young birds loft, after about a week you can take the old straw away but keep a close eye on your young birds, have them out daily they will soon get to know where they are. This is Saturday 30th March. Today I’m taking my Breeder/Buyer birds giving them to President Terry Phifer for the sale today. I’m well pleased with them young- sters, I hope whoever buys them does well with them. It’s a nice day again today so this afternoon I will take my birds up the road for a trainer. Got to keep them going with short chucks, reason is where my loft is I’m surrounded by roofs, they would just sit on the roofs all day every day if I let them so instead I take them for short trainers also the Sparrowhawk often comes as well so when they come back I get them straight in. I was saying to old friend Kev Morgan at his garage in Carlisle far better just to send the birds up the road if there is a hawk coming to your loft every day to get them straight in from the chuck. April 1st and yes it’s April Fools Day,

nothing has happened yet but there is time. Cold very damp sort of day today. The pigeons are looking okay at my lofts they have had quite a few trainers now, some fanciers have had their birds along way off fifty or so miles away so good luck to those fanciers who have put them- selves out for there racing pigeons. I have one more youngster for the NWHU Breeder/Buyer sale which should be ready for this coming Saturday. From what Terry Phifer was saying the sales are going really well this is good news. We have to move forward with the pigeons also something to look forward to, although I haven’t been anywhere near with my birds in Breeder/Buyer results they do turn in. So we wait and see if this year’s Breeder/Buyer is a bit better. Good luck to those who bought them. I have a few youngsters nearly ready for friend Davey Dowel out of birds we sorted out and bought together, they look the part all distance bred birds, so I’m hoping they do well for Davey. Also a few youngsters are nearly ready for Mike Munro up top of Scotland. Mike has just started in pigeon racing and as we all know it takes time to get going. Oh well time to get my birds out, see you later. Glenny

This is Friday 29th march as I’m writing these notes down. I was chatting with new starter from up in Thurso today called Mike, he used to keep a few pigeons with one of his relatives but has just built a loft round at his home and bought a few youngsters in from all over, some have been gifted to him. He has joined local club so we wish him well for the future. Good friend Davey Dowel was on the phone, he has had the vet round to his lofts so he can enter into the Channel events this year. The cost was £50 for the vets visit everything went well so Dave was saying. So good luck with the Channel events to Dave. Whilst I was walking our dog Queenie near Gretna today I noticed someone liberating some pigeons. As I got closer I saw it was old friends Gus & Pam Power from Gretna just training a few later bred birds getting them used to the basket, I

had a little chat with them. When I got back home from Gretna Gateway which is a shopping area, I took my own birds up the road to a place called Waverton Cumbria a few miles past Wigton. It was a nice day and when I got back most of them were back waiting to be let in so that was okay, then I managed to get the young birds out and cleaned out. Everything takes such a lot of time up when you have racing pigeons. For the new starter as I was telling Mike from the top of Scotland when you first get youngsters put into young birds loft, remember to dip their beaks into the water fountain and have corn in a hopper for them. Try to keep your loft clean and wash the water fountain out as often as you can putting clean fresh water in for them at least twice a day also if you have the time be with your youngsters let them get used to you, and don’t starve your pigeons. Have them fairly hungry when
