Meditation on the Lesson Dispensationajly speaking, these words are prophetic o f the Lord’s judgment of the nations at the close of the great tribu lation period, when He will punish or re ward them according to their treatment of His “brethren,” the Jews. While the reader should seek first o f all for the simple meaning of the passage that is studied, he should not omit the application to his own heart of other truths that it may suggest. Apart from their prophetic interpretation, the two verses o f our lesson call attention to the relationship to others, for Christ’s sake. The epistles repeatedly emphasize our duty to others. James 1 :27 speaks of the duty o f visiting the fatherless and widows in their affliction. Paul, writing to the Ephesians, says: “ Let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that need- eth” (Eph. 4:28). In other words, Chris tians are to engage in honest toil in order to help others, not thinking merely of their own desires and needs. Searching indeed are the questions raised by John and James: “ But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shut- teth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love o f God in him?” (1 John 3:17). “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwith standing ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” (Jas. 2:15,16). From these and similar passages, we can readily see the emphasis the Scriptures place on what some people term “practical Christianity.” The greater stress, however, must always be upon proclaiming the good news that “ Christ died for our sins accord ing to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again” (1 Cor. 15 :3, 4 )—with power to deliver from the bondage o f sin. .„“ Put first things first” was never more true than here, for where evangelism is made the prime factor, social reforms follow, as missionary stories will testify. Where are the hospitals, schools, orphans’ homes, and asylums ? They are to be found where the gospel has_ first been preached. It is man’s heart, not his environ ment, that needs first to be changed. When Christ is enthroned in the life, one’s atti tude toward his fellow men will take on a radical change from that o f the natural man. There will be love, for Christ’s sake, extending to even the unlovely, and there will be compassion shown toward all for whom Christ died. It was remarked to an American bishop that the Americans returning from the coronation of George V would bring home with them all sorts o f new fashions and probably new religions. A suggestion was added that an import duty should be im posed on these new religions. “ Ah,” said the bishop, “the pity is that these new religions don’t carry any duties with them.”—S elected . II. When we approach the incident open ing with John 13:1, we find again the sur passing love o f Christ. Knowing the near ness of His suffering, He “ loved his own . . . unto the end.” And our Lord has said: “ Follow me.” If we are to obey this command, we must have a heart o f com passionate love toward all. Such loving tenderness is deeper and more inclusive than mere good will. Leader’s Helps I. E xperiencing C hrist ’ s C ompassion “ Oh, He is a great Forgiverl” Such were the words of a hardened sinner as he stood on the scaffold in the town of Ayr to suffer for his crimes the last penally of the law. While in prison, he had been brought to repentance, and so full was his assurance in the efficacy o f Christ’s atone ment, and so real his sense o f pardon, that when he came to the place of execution, he could not help crying out to the people, “ Oh, He is a great Forgiverl” adding, “How hath perfect love cast out fear 1” Truly, Christ is “able also to save them to the uttermost” (Heb. 7 :25). —P ickering . II. T he M aster ’ s B rush A young Italian boy knocked at the door o f an artist’s studio in Rome, and when it was opened, exclaimed, “Please, Madam, will you give me the master’s brush?” The painter was dead, and the boy, in flamed with a longing to be an artist, wished for the great master’s brush. The lady placed the brush in the boy’s hand, saying, “This is his brush; try it, my boy.” With a flush of earnestness on his face, he tried, but found he could paint no better than with his own. The lady then said, “You cannot paint like the great master unless you have his spirit” (cf. Lk. 9:55).—P ickering . III. His L ife -L ong S acrifice He who is the Bread o f Life began His ministry hungering. He who is the Water of Life ended His ministry thirsting. Christ hungered as man, and fed the hun gry as God. He was weary, and yet He is our rest. _ He paid tribute, and yet He is the King. He was called a devil, and cast out devils. He prayed, and yet He hears prayers. He wept, and He dries our tears. • He is sold for thirty pieces of silver, and redeems the world. He is led as a lamb to the slaughter, and is the Good Shepherd. He dies, and gives His life, and by dying destroys death .—The Christian. MAY 26, 1935 W H AT SHALL WE DO ABOUT SOCIAL INJUSTICES?
