MAY 26 Cling to the Risen One ‘‘Behold, I am alive fo r evermore” (Rev. 1 :18). The resurrection life — how absolutely safe and secure I We sometimes hear the expression, “ Cling to the cross.” How much better would be, “ Cling to the Crucified,” or, better still, “ Cling to the Risen One.” Yet this clinging on our part implies some uncertainty. Suppose I let go. I may do sol Then, what will become of my safety? How insecure my condition after all! How far more comforting the divine assurance, “Your life is hid with Christ in God.” Or, consider the words of the inspired apostle: “ Christ, who is our life.” If Christ die, then we shall perish—not otherwise. And He says, “Behold, I am alive for ever more.” Here, then, is absolute safety for every one “in Christ.”—J. T. W. MAY 27 Unbroken Communion "Praying in the Holy Ghost, keep your selves in the love o f God” ’ (Jude 20, 21). I cannot keep in my love to God. Alas for my unfilial heart 1 I cannot keep God’s love in me. But I can keep myself in the love o f God. I can rest there. I can rejoice there. I can trust there. Lord Jesus, weary and dissatisfied as we are with our own love, we will continue in Thy love. . . . “ Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving” (Col. 4:2 ). Here is the open secret of spiritual growth and victory. For prayer, in its deepest sense, is com munion—the having in common with G od; His strength for our weakness, His life for our death, His love for our selfishness. Therefore, the real success o f prayer de pends upon its unbroken continuance. |S§j§-A. J. G ordon . MAY 28 Tarrying until Christ Comes “I f I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me" (John 21:22). In the last chapter of St. John’s Gospel, we have the last word that he tells us as spoken by the Master before His ascension . . . “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.” “If I will”-—it is the word o f a King, and who cannot detect the voice o f royalty that speaks there? “If I will that he tarry till I come, . . .” Then there are some who are to tarry till Christ comes . . . “Two men shall be in the field, the one shall be taken and the other left.” “ Taken” —the very word that describes the taking of E lija h - escaped death, translated. There be some that shall tarry till the Lord come. What if it be you? What if it be even me? — J. E lder C u m m in g . I hear men everywhere praying for more faith; but when I listen to them carefully and get at the real heart o f their prayers, very often it is not more faith at all that they are-wanting, but a change from faith to sight. “What shall I do with sorrow that God has sent me?” Take it up and- bear it, and get strength and blessing out o f it. “Ah, if I only knew what blessing there is in it ; if I saw how it would help me, then I would bear it.” . . . Faith says not, “ I see that it is good for me, and so God must have sent it,” but, “God sent it, and so it must be good for me.” Faith, walking MAY 29 Walking in the Dark with God “Increase our faith” (Lk. 17:5).

in the dark with God, only prays Him to clasp his hand more closely. — P h il l ip s B rooks . MAY 30 Glory Ahead “For our conversation is in heaven” (Phil. 3:20). Not with fear or regret does Paul think o f the hour when his poor body of dust, wearied with toil, wasted by suffering, the prey of death, shall be changed into the fashion of Christ’s body o f glory. What that glory was he could never forget. Damascus, with its opened heaven and its glorified Jesus, was too real, too divine to be forgotten. . . . He cried: “ Our home is in the heavens, from whence also we eagerly await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Millions by God’s grace have made Paul’s words their own and can say: “ Beyond the smiling and the weeping I shall be soon; Beyond the sowing and the reaping I shall be soon. Love, rest, and home I Sweet, sweet home! Lord, tarry not, but come 1” —Alliance Weekly. “ Oh that I had wings like a doveI for then would I fly away, and be at rest” (Psa. 55:6). And whither would’st thou fly, O soul, I f thou hadst wings? Is rest beyond the seas? at either pole? Are there the springs Where heaven’s pure waters bubble up, below? And the far oceans answer sadly, “No I” Where would’st thou fly? to works, to forms? With thy dove-wings? Will these give shelter from eternal storms— . These poor dead things? And Working answers with a voice severe, Turn back, mistaken soul, rest is not here. Ah, soul, thou need’st not fly away To find thy rest; Peace seeks for thee if thou wilt stay, And just be blessed: Fold up thy wings and sit at Jesus’ feet, There wilt thou find thy heaven—a rest complete. — H en ry B urton .
