F or the last couple of months we have been considering some as pects of life. This month let us consider one of the problems sur rounding death. In First Corinthians 15:21 we read, “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead” and in Ro mans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” and Romans 5:17 “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one . . .” Now these verses confront us with an interesting problem. They seem to imply that the sin of Adam caused the entrance of death into the world. But if this were the correct interpretation we w ou ld be faced with a very serious conflict between science and the Scriptures. The fossil record reveals that plants and ani mals lived and died many centuries before man appeared on the earth, when as , these verses seem to imply "that death did not exist until after mar was created and had sinned. Be- cau#e of our confidence that God, who crc ated the world and everything in it also caused an accurate account of tl.is creation to be recorded in the Bible, we know that this conflict is just apparent. Can the scientist be wrong? Is it possible that these fos sil forms were contemporaneous ■with man? I think not. The evidence from g e o log y and paleontology seems to conclusively prove the existence of plants and animals before man; some of which existed millions of years before man. Since this is so, then we must take a closer look at these and other verses which might shed some light on our

problem. In John 11:25 and 26' we read the following: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” In these verses we have the solution to our problem. First Christ tells us that those who have died believing in Him shall live. Obviously Jesus is here talking about the physical death of believers and their resurrection ui to eternal life. Then in verse 26 Jesus says whosoever believes in Him shall never die yet we know that many b elievers have gone to the grave since Christ made this state ment. Obviously then, in verse 26 Christ was not referring to physical death as in the preceding verse but must have been referring to spiritual death. This is referred to as the sec ond death in Revelation 21:8, “ But the fearful, arid unbelieving, and the abom inab le, and murderers and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (See also Revelation 2:11 and 20:6.) So we learn this great truth that the Scriptures recognize two types of death — physica l and spiritual. Realizing this then we" are in a position to solve our problem. Was there death before Adam? Yes, ph y sica l death, this is the death which science can record. But the death of First Corinthians 15:21 and Romans 5:12 and 17 is spiritual death the culmination of which is the sec ond death which is the portion of all those who are not trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.
