The Bearing of B eeent D iscovery on' the Trustworthi ness of the New Testament By W. M. Ramsay Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851- 1939), humanist archeologist of Asia Minor, by his own testimony was transformed into an evangelical be liever through his work in the same area on the Apostle Paul. The sub stance of the present work was deliv ered as the James Sprunt Lectures for 1911; about 1920 the book was “al most wholly rewritten.” Much of the material here, as might be expected, concerns Paul, his epis tles, and the book of Acts. The word “ recent” in the title should not be taken to denote discoveries later than some thirty years ago. Scholars will be glad to welcome this work back into print. 427 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich., $4.50. Deference Passage Bible New Testament Compiled by I. N. Johns This Bible has been reprinted from time to time since 1902. It is similar to the more familiar type of reference Bible, except that the references are printed out in full on the same page with the text. The value of this fea ture is obvious. The Gospels are print ed in harmony form, with two Gospels on each page. Although the text of the New Testament only is treated, the commentary references are taken from the Old as well as the New Tes tament. The minister or teacher with this Bible opened to his text will dis cover that much valuable time is sav ed in having the most important ref erences immediately before him. In dexes and maps complete the volume. 1451 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chi cago, 111.; $6.95. This volume can hardly be called a reprint in the sense usually borne by that word. Within the last two or three years the author, head of the Department of Biblical Literature, University of Sheffield, England, an earnest contemporary conservative scholar, has published three small books, The Dawn of Christianity, the story of the infant Church to the fall of Jerusalem, A.D. 70; The Growing Day, from A.D. 70 to the accession of Constantine, A.D. 313; and Light in the West, Christianity in Rome after The Spreading Flame The Dise and Progress Of Christianity By F. F. Bruce

Constantine, and its spread to Britain and the English - speaking world. These have been reviewed in these columns. Eerdmans now reprints all three in the same volume, and the work forms an admirable early church history. Laymen as well as ministers would profit from reading this tremendous record. 543 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $5.00. B eyond Humiliation By J. Gregory Mantle J. Gregory Mantle (1852-1925) was an English Bible teacher, minister, and editor of the Illustrated Mission ary News, London. Subtitled The Way of the Cross, A Contribution to the Doctrine of Christian Sanctity, this volume is a real classic of devotional reading treating of the consecrated life—the closer walk with Christ. The book abounds in the best in poetry, illustration, and quotations from the finest Christian scholars and writers. 248 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chi cago, 111.; $3.00. Number in Scripture Its Supernatural Design And Spiritual Significance By E. W. Bullinger Even those who cannot follow the author in his doctrinal variations rec ognize his diligence in working with the Scriptures and profit from his clear and systematic way of recording the results of his study. It is probably true that some have over-emphasized the significance of numbers in the Bible, but most evangelicals recognize the necessity of making use of their spiritual meaning. A discriminating use of this exhaustive work will prove valuable to the minister. 303 pages; cloth; The Lamp Press, London, Eng land, $4.00. Seventh-Dag Adventism Denounced By D. M. Canright Only those who have tried to find this book before its reprinting can re alize how scarce it was. D. M. Can- right (1830-1919) held the highest positions in the Seventh-Day Adven tist movement in its early years; he was well acquainted with its pioneer leaders, including Ellen G. White. This book records his experiences in side the movement and the gradually increasing qualms which resulted in his leaving it. This is beyond question the outstanding work explaining the unscriptural positions of Seventh-Day legalism. 418 pages; cloth;B. C. Good- pasture, Nashville, Term.; $3.00.
