Year 10 has been on work experience this week with placements at local schools, Sky TV, Google, The National Archives and even on a farm! We are delighted to have achieved the Attachment Aware Schools Gold Award, which was presented yesterday, to recognise our work on under- standing the impact of trauma on students’ learning and wellbeing. You can find out more about it through these videos: Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences & Their Impact on Youth The Importance of Seeing the Individual Child This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and it’s a good time to remind ourselves of the dangers of alcohol for young people, particularly as they may be planning end of year celebrations or going to events or festivals over the summer holidays etc. This fact sheet is really helpful, as is the Talk to FRANK guide to festivals. Finally the Anna Freud Centre are holding their final webinar of the year on Tuesday 8th July 12-1pm. ‘Supporting your young person with anxiety before they get their exam results’ will explore ways in which parents and carers can support their young person with feelings of anxiety before re- sults day. The webinar offers top tips from the Anna Freud Centre young champions and healthy coping strategies that can be used to support their own and their young person’s mental wellbeing. Parents and carers can register here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Year 12 students had yet another busy week in and out of lessons. On Wednesday, as part of the whole school Drop Down Day, the Year 12 students took part in a year-specific sports day. They all took part in one or more activities and it was a fantastic day for all.

Yesterday our Year 12 Biology students were treated to a workshop with the Faculty of Medicine from Imperial College about choosing a degree in Life and Medical Sciences. Finally, today, our A Level Textiles students took part in a new designer’s workshop and Art students took part in an Oil Painting Workshop. There are plenty of talks and workshops coming up next week for Year 12. On Monday after school we are hosting a talk about Journalism and on Tuesday we are holding a Classics Workshop after school. These talks are open to those interested in studying a degree in these areas. The Geography Department has organised to take students interested in a Geography Degree to Royal Holloway’s Geography Taster Day on Wednesday. Finally, on Friday the Year 12 Art students will attend the annual Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition, our A Level Physics students will be attending a Physics Summer School at Imperial College all week.

Have a lovely weekend!

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH

Last Friday the sports fields were a sea of blue PE uniforms and the air was filled with cheers of encouragement for our annual Sports Day. Form classes had chosen their participants for the events during tutor times, with every student participating in at least one event and supporting their house. House points were awarded based on the placement of the participants and as you can see from the tables above it was a close contest, with only 207 points between the highest and lowest totals. The day began with Years 7 and 8 taking part in the amateur events including egg and spoon, sack and skipping races as well as more traditional track and field events. Highlights included Year 7 and 8 breaking Waldegrave records across the 800m B! After morning break Year 9 and 10 competitors took their turns with a further seven records broken, many of which were by our field participants. In the afternoon competitors took part in the 100m, 200m and relay track events and as the whole school gathered on the fields the cheering came to a crescendo! There were two more records broken by the Year 7s but the biggest excitement came as the staff limbered up for their relay race. PE retained their title as staff relay champions for the fifth year running but Maths and Science fought hard for the silver with Mr Reynolds securing second place with his sprint. It was a wonderful day for all and left everyone full of school spirit!
