A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Year 12 students had yet another busy week in and out of lessons. On Wednesday, as part of the whole school Drop Down Day, the Year 12 students took part in a year-specific sports day. They all took part in one or more activities and it was a fantastic day for all.
Yesterday our Year 12 Biology students were treated to a workshop with the Faculty of Medicine from Imperial College about choosing a degree in Life and Medical Sciences. Finally, today, our A Level Textiles students took part in a new designer’s workshop and Art students took part in an Oil Painting Workshop. There are plenty of talks and workshops coming up next week for Year 12. On Monday after school we are hosting a talk about Journalism and on Tuesday we are holding a Classics Workshop after school. These talks are open to those interested in studying a degree in these areas. The Geography Department has organised to take students interested in a Geography Degree to Royal Holloway’s Geography Taster Day on Wednesday. Finally, on Friday the Year 12 Art students will attend the annual Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition, our A Level Physics students will be attending a Physics Summer School at Imperial College all week.
Have a lovely weekend!
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH
