A New Chapter Begins LEADING FEDERAL BENEFITS MADE SIMPLE INTO A NEW ERA
As we turn a new page at Federal Benefits Made Simple, I’m thrilled to step in and say hello as your new president. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work closely with Ann over the last couple of years, but, as you know, she is entering the next phase of her life with a well-deserved retirement. Our goal at Federal Benefits Made Simple is simple yet ambitious: to ensure the transition is as smooth as can be while maintaining the high bar of service, planning, and education you’ve come to expect from us. The past two years have been an incredible journey of learning for me. From delving deep into the nuances of federal benefits to teaching classes both online and across the gorgeous landscapes of the U.S., every day has been a new adventure. And yes, working with staff members at national parks has its perks — I’ve visited places I’ve only read about in books! Twenty-seven years ago, when my career in financial services began, I focused on nonprofits before moving into various roles within the industry. Now, I’m back in the realm of benefits, and I feel a deep sense of fulfillment to help federal employees navigate into well-deserved retirements. On a personal note, I’m a father to four amazing kids whose lives and endless activities have kept me more than busy! The adventures never cease as they grow and find their own paths. Our family loves the outdoors, especially the stunning mountains of the Colorado 14ers, where skiing, snowboarding, camping, and hiking are just a few of our regular weekend routines. And when I finally get some time
for myself, you’ll likely find me on the golf course or taking our two adopted dogs for long walks or playing in the dog park. Dogs have always been a big part of our family, particularly rescues. Although we often joke about our home turning into a full-blown dog sanctuary, we’ve promised ourselves to have no more than two! As I step into the role of president, I want to assure you that the foundation Ann has built for Federal Benefits Made Simple remains in good hands. The dedication to service, planning, and education that has been the hallmark of Federal Benefits Made Simple is something I cherish and am committed to continuing. She has willingly shared her knowledge, insights and experiences and her mentoring has been invaluable. Her contribution to building this business is immeasurable, and while she will be greatly missed, we’re both confident that we’re leaving you in capable hands. My promise to you is to keep the ship steady and continue providing the exceptional service you’ve come to expect from all of us. Looking ahead, I’m excited about what the future holds for Federal Benefits Made Simple. Together, we’ll continue to demystify the complexities of federal benefits and help make sure you feel informed, knowledgeable and confident about your retirement planning. Here’s to new beginnings and continued success! –Jeremy Rafferty

SELF-CARE TIPS FOR A HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER YOU
You matter. It’s an easy thing to forget with the overwhelming obligations and responsibilities most people have, but you matter. Everyone, including you, must practice self-care to ensure their happiness and peace of mind. Disconnect From Technology The connectivity provided by technology comes with several benefits, but they
have just as many drawbacks. Companies design phones to be addictive. Your brain releases a little dopamine whenever you get a notification, not unlike a slot machine. That’s why we constantly check our phones, even when they don’t ring or vibrate. Meanwhile, studies correlate heavy social media usage with profound feelings of loneliness and depression. Everyone needs to distance themselves from technology every so often. Try leaving your phone at home when you go outside or set a specific no-screen time. Better yet, dive into nature. Practice yoga in the park or hike through the woods and breathe in the fresh air instead of scrolling. Dream More Our bodies demand that we spend about a third of the day sleeping, and it does so for a reason. Almost every cell needs time to refresh and renew. But many people continue to shrug off sleep, which falls to the bottom of their priorities.
Take the time to increase your sleep quality. It helps almost every part of your body, from brain to toe. To do so, implement positive sleep habits. Don’t watch TV before bed, keep your bedroom dark, and put your phone on “do not disturb.” Indulge Yourself It’s all too easy to devote our lives to other people, but taking time for ourselves is essential. Some me-time lets you get some perspective through joy. Once a month, push the responsibilities away and spend the day doing what you love. If you want a spa day, get a massage. If you’d prefer to paint figurines in your basement, that’s all you.
We spend most of our time in our heads, preoccupied with our thoughts and focused
on our obligations. It’s not good for our mental health. The sheer weight of life is heavy on our shoulders and minds. Ease those worries and anxieties by putting the phone away, getting a good night’s sleep, and spending quality time with ourselves. 9 FINANCIAL TIPS TO BE RETIREMENT READY
Get Financially Ready for Your Golden Years
5. Have a Social Security Strategy: Delaying Social Security benefits can increase your monthly income. Strategize the best time to start receiving payments, taking into consideration your health, financial needs, and benefits for your spouse. 6. Create an Emergency Fund: A robust emergency fund should cover unexpected expenses, aiming for 3–6 months worth of living expenses. This fund can help you avoid dipping into retirement savings prematurely. 7. Plan for Inflation: Inflation can erode your purchasing power over time. Consider investments that offer inflation protection, such as Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) or certain types of annuities. 8. Update Estate Planning: Make sure your wills, trusts, and powers of attorney are accurate. Estate planning helps protect your assets and ensures your wishes are followed. 9. Continue Learning: Financial literacy doesn’t stop when you retire. Stay informed about tax laws, investment opportunities, and retirement strategies to make the most of your retirement years. These are foundational steps toward a comfortable and secure retirement. Our team is here to support you in making these decisions and ensure you are well-prepared for the next chapter of your life.
For us, Financial Literacy Month is our time to shine! It’s a period of reflection, learning, and planning for the future that ensures a smooth transition into the retirement you’ve always dreamt of. To help you get started, our team has collected the top financial tips that soon-to-be retirees need to know. 1. Understand Your Retirement Needs: Retirement planning is more than just saving money; it’s about understanding your future needs and lifestyle desires. Experts suggest aiming for at least 70% of your pre-retirement income to maintain your standard of living in retirement. Yet, it’s crucial to consider your needs for the best plan. 2. Maximize Your Retirement Savings: If you’re still working, now is the time to max out your contributions to retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs. You can also take advantage of catch-up contributions if you’re over 50, allowing you to save additional funds. 3. Eliminate Debt: Entering retirement debt-free, including mortgages, credit cards, and loans, can significantly reduce your financial stress and lower your monthly expenses. 4. Plan for Health Care Expenses: With rising health care costs, planning for medical expenses is crucial. Consider health savings accounts (HSAs) and understand your Medicare options and supplemental insurance needs along with long-term care insurance.

SUPER PITTY! Kilo’s Amazing Bravery and Survival In a heartwarming tale of courage and resilience, a pit bull named Kilo defied the odds after being shot in the head while bravely protecting his owner. The incident unfolded when an intruder invaded Kilo’s home. In a shocking turn of events, Kilo’s instinct to shield his owner led to a life-threatening injury, but “Super Pitty” survived, capturing many hearts, too. One Saturday evening 12 years ago on Staten Island, a gunman posing as a FedEx deliveryman rang the doorbell of Kilo’s home. He didn’t wait long before he pushed his way into the apartment. Kilo’s human, Justin Becker, told CBS, “He barged in. My first reaction after seeing the gun was to push him out, so I pushed him to the door.” Becker’s girlfriend, Nicole Percoco, had been holding Kilo during this encounter and let him go. Kilo jumped into action, fighting back against the invader, unfortunately getting shot in the fight. Luckily, the bullet just missed Kilo’s skull, entering and exiting right under his ears, said Dr. Gregory L. Panarello, the medical director of South Shore Animal Hospital. After a 40-minute surgery to remove bullet fragments, he was patched up and even given a superhero insignia on his bandage. Three days later, Kilo was up and going on every dog’s favorite pastime: walkies. Kilo’s story is a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of canine companions and the strength of their love for us. Even 12 years later, Super Pitty Kilo’s story still spreads love and happiness. Give your pet an extra cuddle tonight so they know just how much you love them!

Unusual Sleep Practices in the Middle Ages: THE 2 ACTS OF MEDIEVAL SLUMBER
In the Middle Ages, most people didn’t sleep for eight uninterrupted hours like we do today. Instead, they had a “biphasic” sleep schedule, which means they had two sleep phases, one in the evening with a brief period of activity in the middle. For first sleep, the household typically slept from 9–11 p.m. They slept on one single straw mattress. Everyone — including children, parents, and visitors — huddled on one bed.
people socialized with each other, but the busy schedules of farming families cut down on chatting time. After they went to bed for a second sleep, they’d wake up at dawn. Not everyone kept to the schedule. Young children slept all night unless they woke up to the commotion. Benedictine monks dozed at 7 p.m. and woke at 2 a.m. for prayer, staying awake until an afternoon nap. Still, most people followed the two-part sleep schedule, and medieval medicine even discussed how to do it properly. For example, medical texts recommended that they lie on their right side during the first sleep and switch to the left on the second sleep.
Despite the lack of space, they tried to make it as comfortable as possible with complex sleeping arrangements. Touching, kicking, or any other
restless activity was considered rude. Meanwhile, girls slept closest to the wall, followed by boys, guests, and parents.
It’s really not that weird — research suggests that biphasic sleep is quite natural and influenced more by lifestyle compatibility, which means the eight-hour schedule likely
