Fire Service Leaders... Who happen to be Women

Dr. Lori Moore Merrell Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell is one of the smartest and hardest working people I’ve known. She is currently the Principal Fire Safety Strategist for UL Research Institutes' Fire Safety

Research Institute (FSRI) where she guides global research strategies and leads international collaboration in fire safety. Her career in the fire service began in 1987, when she became one of the first women to be hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic in the Memphis (TN) Fire Department. In 1993, a unique opportunity came her way, and she accepted a position with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Headquarters in Washington, DC. Lori spent 26 years at the IAFF becoming Assistant to the General President while focusing on myriad issues including fire service-based EMS, fire department staffing and fire operations, and labor issues (including collective bargaining). In that capacity, she also served as the principal investigator and senior project manager of scientific research overseeing landmark reports and related tools to improve residential and high-rise fireground operations, community risk assessment, fire and EMS resource deployment, and "Big Data Analytics". After retiring from the IAFF, Lori founded the International Public Safety Data Institute (IPSDI), where she served as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Then, On October 25, 2021, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell was appointed by President Joe Biden as the United States Fire Administrator. During her time as the U.S. Fire Administrator, she led the United States Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy (NFA) through a time of significant change. She oversaw the realignment of the organization to more closely match its mission as set forth in the 1974 Federal Fire
