Dr. Denise Smith The evolution and prominence of evidence-based scientific research focused directly on key elements of fire service performance has become critical to informing myriad areas of decision-making regarding fire behavior, firefighting tactics, firefighter health & safety, and the overall

effectiveness of fire service performance. Dr. Denise Smith, PhD, is a highly regarded professor of Health and Exercise Sciences at Skidmore College where she directs the First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory. She also serves as a Research Scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) and is a past Director of the National Fire Research and Data Center within the United States Fire Administration (USFA). Dr. Smith's body of work, knowledge, and expertise are shared in many ways as an active contributor and partner within the fire service. Her research focuses on cardiovascular health and the specific strain placed on firefighters due to heat stress, heavy physical work, and psychological pressure. Denise is passionate about firefighter health and safety and is a highly respected and talented speaker at national and international conferences. As an author, she has co-written several textbooks, written multiple book chapters, and has published more than 60 scientific papers. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health committee, an investigator for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) firefighter fatality investigation and prevention program, a "Science to the Station" Board Member, and is even
