PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Merry & Bright
T he most wonderful time of the year has arrived! Our tree went up on November 2nd this year - the longer the Christmas decorations, and all the holiday magic that comes with them, are in my house, the better! The holiday season for our family tends to start as early as September when Nutcracker ballet rehearsals begin. My own daughter performs each year, along with our Young Achiever this month, Miss Maggie Staples. Maggie’s cover photo with Dance Alive National Ballet dancer Stirling Kolb is one of my favorites. In my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful Stroll Town of Tioga covers to date. Learn about Maggie and her journey as a ballet dancer in her article on page 14 and experience the magic of The Nutcracker at the UF Performing Arts Center December 19th - 21st. Also, this month, say hello to Hannah Harvin, meet Maggie’s dog, Cookie, and learn about The Independence Project and the
beautiful event hosted by Catherine and Jason West. Check out photos from Halloween 2025, too! Our Partner Spotlight story this month highlights Zari and Dr. Joshua Cooper of Not Your Average Therapy. Learn about how you can give the gift of wellness with their help this year - a gift that is anything but average! Our Tioga neighbor, Kim Miles, is spreading Holiday cheer through Porchette. If you’d like Kim to decorate your porch for the Holidays, reach out to her at (904) 624-0313. I hope you all can make it to the HOA’s Cart and Bike the Tioga Lights event on December 21st!
The holidays remind us that the greatest gifts come from the heart. At Comfort Keepers, we help bring comfort, joy, and peace of mind to those who need it most — through compassionate, personalized care that allows them to remain safe and connected at home. This season and always, we’re here to bring comfort, connection, and compassionate care to you or someone you love.
Season of Giving. Power of Kindness. Comfort of Home.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS
Maggie with Stirling Kolb, The Nutcracker
This neighborhood has such an amazing community and I’m so incredibly grateful I get to live here! I live with my parents, Anne and Andy Staples, my brother, Will, and my Bernedoodle named Cookie. My mom is an exceptional PA for the University of Florida. My dad is the most hardworking sportswriter you will ever meet, and my brother is kindest and calmest teenage boy I know. Will also is an unbelievable football player who knows how to balance his athletic life with his academic life. These three people are my greatest inspiration. They inspire me to pursue every ambition whether that be in dance, school or just being a good person. Along with my family, I receive so much support and inspiration from my friends and teachers at my dance studio. While I have been dancing for ten-plus years, I only switched to Pofahl a little over a year ago. Not only have I had so Hi! My name is Maggie Staples. I am a fourteen-year- old ninth grader at Oak Hall School and a dancer at Pofahl Studios in Gainesville. I have lived in Town of Tioga for nine years!

many opportunities to meet new friends and have new experiences, I have improved so much as a dancer over this past year. Through so much encouragement and constructive criticism, I have grown to love dance even more than I thought I ever could! While it wasn’t easy in the beginning, I was pushed to always keep trying and to focus on even the smallest details, especially in ballet. Not only have I become physically stronger, I am so much more detail-oriented and can easily find ways to improve and keep pushing to be better not just in dance, but in my social and academic life as well! Not only is Pofahl an amazing studio, it is directly affiliated with Dance Alive National Ballet. Dance Alive is a national touring ballet company that has the most amazing and beautiful performances such as the Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and Swan Lake. It also has the kindest, most inspiring professional dancers. Dance Alive presents so many unique opportunities for Pofahl students. One of those is performing in Nutcracker. This is my first year in Nutcracker and I can’t even find the words for how excited I am! The whole production is absolutely gorgeous and I can’t wait to be a part of the Gainesville shows and touring shows! Dance Alive gives students so many opportunities to perform, and performing is one of my favorite parts about being a dancer. Being able to be a part of such a magnificent production of the Nutcracker is truly amazing and has really put me in the Christmas Spirit. Some other fun facts about me? I have been playing the piano since I was six. One of my favorite parts of my day is seeing my dog, Cookie, who is absolutely adorable and never fails to make me laugh. Two quotes I live by are “You go out there, you give 110%,” from Bedazzled and “If you ain’t first, you’re last,” from Talladega Nights.

MEET COOKIE!
My Happy Place
Hi Neighbors,
My name is Cookie Staples. I’m a 5-year-old Bernedoodle, and I love living in Tioga! My favorite thing in the whole world is a walk down the esplanade with my mom and dad. There are so many wonderful things to sniff and so many lizards to chase. I have a human brother named Will and a human sister named Maggie. My job is to give them cuddles whenever they need them. I’m also an expert at warning my family when the UPS guy is delivering a package. I got my name from the white tuft of fur on my chest that makes me look like an Oreo cookie. In fact, my full name is Cookie Oreo Staples. If you have any extra cookies, I’d be happy to take them off your hands. I love my toys, but I don’t like to tear them up or even squeak them very much. I just like to hoard them. I also love going on vacation with my family. I am a sea dog at heart, so I especially love when we go to the Keys. I am the luckiest dog in the world!

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
FROM PASSION TO PURPOSE Both Zari and Josh discovered their calling through personal experiences that shaped their empathy and expertise. Josh, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and UF graduate, found his path after a sports injury during college. “My pursuit became my passion,” he says. “Helping people restore movement and confidence is an incredible privilege.” For Zari, a certified lymphedema therapist and UF alumna, the appeal of occupational therapy was its hands-on ability to transform lives. “I can see measurable improvements in just one session—reductions in swelling, faster wound healing, and visible changes that completely alter someone’s quality of life,” she shares. “It’s powerful, and it inspires me every day.” A FAMILY ROOTED IN CARE The Coopers are proud parents to two young boys—ages three and one—and their beloved dog Granite, a 10-pound therapy mascot who sometimes joins appointments to spread a little extra love. Gainesville is home to the family, and their deep connection to the area is reflected in their work and the relationships they have formed. You might spot them at Tioga GHFC, at local playgrounds, or enjoying time outdoors together. When they’re not caring for patients, Josh enjoys baking and tending to their garden, while Zari can often be found singing and dancing around the house. They both share the dream of training as master’s track and field athletes someday.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE THERAPY Anything but average
“We collaborate with your healthcare team to ensure you’re receiving the most comprehensive, effective care possible. That’s what makes us not average—and we absolutely love what we do.”
BY STEPHANIE CANCELLIERI
F ounded by husband-and-wife team Zari and Dr. Joshua Cooper, Not Your Average Therapy brings expert physical and occupational therapy directly to you—wherever you need it most. From the comfort of your home to your favorite community space, or even virtually, their mobile therapy model is redefining what care can look like... and it’s anything but average. ELEVATED CARE ON YOUR TERMS At the heart of their approach is freedom—freedom from insurance limitations, time restrictions, and one-size-fits-all treatments. By operating on a direct-pay model, Zari and Josh can devote their full attention to each client, offering longer sessions, flexible scheduling, and individualized care plans that evolve with life’s ups and downs. Their areas of specialization include lymphedema and chronic swelling, wound healing, neurological rehabilitation (for conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, and more), post- surgical recovery, sports-specific training, pregnancy and postpartum care, and maintenance treatment for clients seeking to live their healthiest lives. They are also authorized dealers for JOBST custom-fit compression garments. “Our care is meant to complement your existing treatments,” Zari explains. “We collaborate with your healthcare team to ensure you’re receiving the most comprehensive, effective care possible. That’s what makes us not average—and we absolutely love what we do.”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HEALING EXPERIENCE The Coopers’ clients often describe their care as “life-changing.” One recent review reads, “Between my husband’s stroke in 2007 and his accident in 2025, we’ve crossed paths with many excellent therapists. Josh is by far the best we’ve ever worked with.” Another client shared, “After one virtual visit with Zari, the edema in my husband’s leg was down by over an inch, and the wound was healing within days. The difference was stunning. Even his surgeon was amazed! This negated the need for another skin graft!” These stories are why Zari’s favorite phrase before every session is, “Let’s go save lives!” With expertise, compassion, and a whole lot of heart, Zari and Joshua Cooper are redefining rehabilitation—one client at a time. They adore working with clients in Tioga because of the great walking paths and the esplanade. Getting outdoors with their clients is wonderful! If you see Josh and Zari around the neighborhood, say hello!

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Transform Your Ground Game!
Wellness Through the Season: Wrapping Up the Year Strong How to protect your health— and your wallet—as we head into the holidays and a new year
LOOKING AHEAD TO RISING COSTS Healthcare costs show no signs of slowing down. In fact, experts predict that premiums and deductibles will rise again next year, leaving many families paying more for less coverage. That’s why it’s worth rethinking how we approach healthcare entirely. Our community has access to and many are exploring models like Direct Primary Care (DPC)—a membership- based approach that offers transparent pricing, direct access to your provider, and no surprise bills. Many (Like To Your Health and Wellness) designed around prevention and proactive health management rather than crisis care. Whether or not you use this model, the concept behind it— consistent, personalized care—makes sense for everyone. The Town of Tioga area offers several options, most of which invite you to a free consultation so it’s a great time to meet your neighboring practices to see if they are the right fit for you and your family. Because in the end, the best way to manage health costs is to need less care through prevention, lifestyle, and mindful living. As we move into the new year, let’s make it a season of renewal—not just for our homes and calendars, but for our bodies and minds too. “Wellness isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention.” Small, steady choices—especially during the busiest time of year—create the biggest rewards in the months to come. TOP 5 WAYS TO END THE YEAR WELL 1. Keep balance, not guilt: Enjoy the treats— just add greens and protein along the way. 2. Stay active: Even short walks help counter stress and big meals. 3. Hydrate daily: Dehydration masquerades as fatigue and hunger. 4. Rest and reset: Prioritize sleep and downtime to avoid burnout. 5. Plan ahead: Schedule wellness visits early for the new year and review your coverage options. SMALL STEPS. BIG IMPACT. Finish the year feeling your best—mind, body, and budget.

AS THE YEAR WINDS DOWN, life seems to speed up. The holiday season brings joy, gatherings, and celebration—but also stress, indulgence, and sometimes exhaustion. It’s a time when healthy habits can easily slip away, yet it’s also the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and recommit to our wellness goals before the new year begins. This year has reminded many families how unpredictable and expensive healthcare can be. Insurance premiums continue to climb, deductibles are higher than ever, and many people are looking ahead to 2026 already bracing for another round of price hikes. The good news? Much of what determines our health—and how much we spend on it—still lies in our own hands. HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE HOLIDAYS Prevention doesn’t take a holiday. The simple habits we practice now can carry us through the season feeling stronger, more balanced, and less likely to get run down. Staying active (even if it’s just a walk after dinner), choosing balanced meals, and getting enough rest all make a difference. Try to balance the festivities with a little structure: hydrate before events, add veggies to your plate, and keep up your movement routine. These small actions help regulate energy, mood, and metabolism while reducing stress and inflammation. Most importantly, keep your regular checkups and lab visits on the calendar. Preventative care—catching potential issues before they become problems—is the most cost- effective way to stay healthy.

MUSCLE FARM’S MONTHLY MOVE
DECEMBER MOVES: Build Your Unshakeable Foundation for the New Year
A HOLIDAY-READY RECIPE: OVERNIGHT GINGERBREAD OATMEAL Start your busy holiday mornings with a breakfast that is high in protein and fiber, preventing crashes and keeping you energized all day long. This can be prepped in minutes the night before! INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup rolled oats • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional, but highly recommended for protein!) • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice) • 1 tsp chia seeds • 1/2 tsp ginger (ground) • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • Pinch of cloves • 1-2 tsp molasses (or maple syrup for sweetness) INSTRUCTIONS Combine all ingredients in a mason jar or a small container. Stir well until all the powder is mixed. Stir well until all the powder is mixed. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, top with crushed walnuts or sliced almonds for extra crunch and healthy fat.

AS THE CALENDAR PAGES turn to December, the pace of life often hits its peak. Between holiday parties, gift wrapping, and year-end deadlines, it’s easy to feel like your fitness goals have been entirely stuffed into a stocking. But here at Muscle Farm, we believe December isn’t the month to put your health on pause; it’s the most critical month to build your unshakeable foundation. You don’t need a grueling new year’s resolution; you just need to maintain the simple, sustainable habits that prevent burnout and give you energy for all the festive fun. This month, we are focusing on consistency, stress management, and posture—the ultimate trifecta for heading into the New Year feeling strong, resilient, and ready for anything. MINDSET FIRST: THE POWER OF MAINTENANCE Forget the pressure to achieve peak performance right now. Your mindset shift for December should be: Consistency, not Intensity. Showing up for two short, effective 30-minute sessions is infinitely better than planning (and canceling) one massive two-hour session. Your Goal: Protect your non-negotiables. If a walk helps manage stress, take it. If a 20-minute bodyweight circuit keeps you energized, do it. By maintaining your routine now, you eliminate the massive mental hurdle of starting from scratch on January 1st.
As a busy mom of three, Katie is passionate about helping other moms find balance and strength through her role as a gym owner and certified trainer, a health coach, and a practicing nurse practitioner. She helps women prioritize their well-being, blending fitness, nutrition, and medical expertise, empowering them to live their healthiest, most energized, and confident lives.
You should feel your low core muscles engaging, supporting your posture. 3. Hold and Breathe: Maintain this gentle core squeeze while you continue your task (driving, stirring a pot, wrapping a gift). The key is to keep breathing normally while holding the contraction. 4. Repeat: Focus on doing this for 30 seconds at a time, 5–10 times throughout your day. It’s small work with huge benefits for your posture and core strength!
STRONG FAMILIES Start Here.
MOVE FOR RESILIENCE: THE “HIDDEN” CORE SQUEEZE Since you’re spending more time sitting (driving, wrapping, office work) or standing (cooking, decorating), this move works your deep core and improves posture without requiring you to stop what you’re doing! The Move: The Posture and Core Squeeze 1. Find Your Alignment: Sit or stand tall. Gently tuck your chin back (like holding an orange under your chin) and draw your shoulders back and down. 2. Engage the Core: Take a deep breath in. As you exhale, pull your belly button gently in and up toward your spine.
TAKE ACTION: BUILD YOUR STRONGEST NEW YEAR NOW!
Ready to head into 2026 feeling stronger than you started the year? Don’t wait for a resolution—let’s build your plan now. At Muscle Farm, we provide the expert coaching and personalized programs that ensure you get maximum results with minimum stress, even during the holidays. From little kids Trick or Treat to the main event, Halloween 2025 was epic! HALLOWEEN 2025! OUT AND ABOUT IN TOWN OF TIOGA
LITTLE KIDS TRICK OR TREAT WITH KATIE FURST The 6th Annual Little Kids’ Trick or Treat, organized by Katie Furst, included fifteen treat stops circling the Town of Tioga Meeting Hall this year. Nearly 60 children from the five-and- under community came out dressed in their Halloween best to accept the Tioga community’s donated treats and toys. The volunteers and sponsors at the treat stops, Alayna from Happy Faces Face Painting (sponsored by Stroll Magazine), made this event a huge success. Stroll Town of Tioga would like to thank Katie Furst for all the work she puts into bringing the neighborhood together, as well as Jazz’s Wonderland and Muscle Farm for making the event so special and sponsoring numerous treats!

VACATIONS & GETAWAYS
It was indeed special, with a few drinks and reminiscing about old times back in Gainesville, while listening to the sounds of the savanna. The next morning, after breakfast, we headed out on a highly anticipated trip to see the wild animals of Kruger. The first animals we saw were a giraffe and a family of hyenas. Giraffes have exceptionally high blood pressure compared to humans, mainly due to their long necks and elevated heads. To maintain adequate blood flow to the brain, their heart must pump blood against gravity, resulting in a mean blood pressure of around 200 mmHg at the heart, which is significantly higher than that of a normal human. This high pressure is necessary to ensure a cerebral perfusion pressure of about 100 mmHg at the head, according to a review article I read. I aim to replicate our previous study on kangaroos, in which we measured phasic pressure and blood flow velocity in the ascending aorta. A group of leopards is called a leap, while a group of lions is called a pride. Leopards are renowned for their exceptional hunting skills, adaptability to diverse habitats, and distinctive physical characteristics. Lions are powerful predators with a strong presence, often referred to as “king of the jungle”. These animals are known to be dangerous and can attack humans, so exercise caution. Two of the biggest flying birds we saw in the park were the kori bustard and the blue crane. The kori bustard is one of the world’s heaviest flying birds; however, it spends most of its time on the ground
SOUTH AFRICAN TALES FROM TRAVEL ENTHUSIAST & STORYTELLER, WILMER NICHOLS
On Thursday morning, July 25, we bid farewell to awesome Amsterdam and hopped on the train to Schiphol Airport, where we boarded our KLM flight to Johannesburg, South Africa. I had booked us a room at the Protea Hotel, which was in Terminal A of the airport, making it accessible to international transit passengers without requiring them to clear immigration. Therefore, we didn’t have to clear customs until the next morning. Our walk to the hotel was quite far, and it really tired me out. We made it to bed about midnight, and I was exhausted. Our flight to Hoedspruit the next day didn’t leave Johannesburg until 1:00 PM, so we had time to rest before having breakfast. We had a delicious breakfast with decent coffee before going through passport control. Our Airlink flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit arrived at 1:55 PM, and Chris and Jenny were there to pick us up. The Lombards purchased a large lot within a fenced compound near Hoedspruit, South Africa, and had a house built. I had no idea there was such a house in all of South Africa. I was expecting, maybe, a two-bedroom shack. When we drove up to the house, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was one of the most beautiful houses I had ever seen; it even had a carport, and Eric and I had our own incredible bedroom. After having the excellent dinner that Jenny prepared, we retired to the veranda and had a few drinks. It was so relaxing after the long trip from Amsterdam. Jenny had grown up in Zimbabwe, and some of her family still lived there, so they moved to South Africa, as Zimbabwe was an adjoining country. After a bit, Eric and I started asking questions about the compound and the animals that lived inside.
Chris said he would take us for a walk around the compound the next day. Then he told us a family of bushbabies lived in the top of the veranda above our heads, and since they are nocturnal animals, they would be coming out soon. He also told us that a prickle (group) of porcupines lived underneath the deck, and they would be out too. After Eric saw the nocturnal animals, he excused himself and went to bed. We arose early the next morning to the smell of coffee and bacon cooking. I don’t know where it came from, but it was delicious. I thought it may be from a warthog like those outside. On our walk about that morning inside the compound where Chris and Jenny lived, we saw several different species of animals. It was amazing. Kruger National Park, located approximately a two-hour drive from Chris and Jenny’s place, is home to a diverse range of animals, including the iconic “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo). Other commonly seen animals include giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and various antelope species. Smaller mammals, such as warthogs, jackals, and hyenas, as well as many bird species, are also present. Kruger National Park is one of the largest national parks in the world, spanning an area of 7,523 square miles. To the north and south of the park, two rivers, the Limpopo River and the Crocodile River, respectively, act as its natural boundaries. Jenny had booked us two bungalows inside the park for our visit; they were situated next door to each other. It sure was nice coming back from a long day in the park to unusually comfortable accommodations. Each bungalow had its own oven and outdoor grill. Chris cooked an excellent dinner for all of us on the grill, and Jenny prepared a wonderful breakfast.

and is reluctant to fly unless in grave danger. Kori bustards are one of the few bird species that drink water using a sucking motion rather than scooping it up. South Africa’s national bird is the blue crane. They are accomplished and graceful flyers, known to fly at speeds of up to 60-70 km/h, often in V formations.

Blue cranes and sandhill cranes, like the ones we see in Florida, share similarities in their general appearance and some behaviors, but are distinct species with unique characteristics. I love hearing the trumpeting call of the migratory sandhill cranes flying over in the spring and fall. For lunch, Chris and Jenny took us to the Tindlovu Olifants Restaurant, which offers outdoor seating with views of the Olifants River, where you can often see elephants drinking The two days in Kruger with Chris and Jenny were really special.
