long hours to make enough money to keep body and soul together. Be cause she was tired, she was irri table with her son and would scold him unmercifully. What she was really doing was taking it out on him for the father’s condition. After I had left, I walked to the end of the little lane, bowed my head and prayed, “ Lord, you have given me the answer. This boy is dying for somebody to love him. He’s dying for someone to give him a little attention. He can’t get at tention in a legitimate way so he tries it through illegitimate means.” The next time he came to Sun day school, I said, “ Say, Dave, how about coming to Sunday school a little early next week?” “W ill you be here?” he asked. “ Sure,” I re plied, “ about 15 minutes before class.” Next Sunday I got there 15 min utes early. He’d been there 15 min utes before that just waiting for me. He was thrilled to think I would come early just to talk to him. W e sat down and talked about his school, about his problems and about the things that he liked to do. I found the thing he was most in terested in was taking a ride in a car because his father didn’t have one. I said, “ Next Saturday I have to run some errands. How about coming along?” Dave and I became the closest pals. He never gave me any trouble in Sunday school after that; in fact, he became one of my greatest allies. If one of the boys would start to disturb the class, he’d just look at him and say, “ Shut up!” The simplest and most profound definition of te a ch in g is th is: “ Teaching is meeting n eed s” If you teach and don’t meet any needs, you haven’t really taught; you’ve just talked. The average Sunday school teacher when asked about his purpose will probably say, “Well, my job is to cover the quar terly.” If your job is to cover the quarterly, put something over it; cover it! That is just about as much as you will accomplish. Know Your Bible The second thing you will have to know in order to effect change
