parsley and some fresh green peas. Over there is a tall glass of iced tea with a wedge of lemon over one side. Over here is a pressed jello salad garnished with some grated cheese. Then there’s my favorite cherry pie just piled high with whipped cream. That’s one way to serve a meal. Now I could go home and sit down at the same table. I could look down and see a bowl. I would say to my wife, “ What in the world is this?” “ Oh,” she would reply, “ I was so busy today, I just didn’t have time to get the meal as usual so I decided to take the steak, the mashed potatoes, the peas, the iced tea, the cherry pie and the salad and just put them all together.” Both of these meals are equally nourishing but they’re not equally appetizing. What are you serving on Sunday morning: hash or a well-spread meal? The difference is a difference in method. I would like to suggest three things you can do to improve the “ how” of your teaching. First of all, I’d suggest that you get busy in a reading program. I have a lot of confidence in the power of the printed page and if we could just get some teachers to read a book occasionally, it would be amazing what would happen. I knew a fellow down in Dallas that I worked with for a long per iod of time without getting too far with him. Finally I ran across a little pamphlet that I gave him with the comment, “ Bill, how about reading this? I think there might be something in here that would be real helpful in teaching your class of boys.” So Bill started read ing and it wasn’t long before he came across a new idea. He tried it out and it worked. Then he read some more ideas and they worked too. That fellow has read nine books and is starting his tenth. His wife told me he has read as many books in the past six months as in the prior 10 year period. And I wish you could look in on his class and see what’s happening to that young man who got an obsession to improve his teaching and who started by reading some good books about it.
