it was. We used just ordinary sand but white sand isn’t too expensive and is cleaner. Before a lesson you have to wet the sand down to make it stay where you want it. It really takes quite a lot of water. Sand table lessons are more work to prepare at first but the more you work at it, the easier it becomes because you accumulate a lot of dolls and properties which can be used over and over. I bought the dolls at the dime store. They were about five inches high. Bible story pictures help in knowing how to dress them. Use bright colored cloth as the children like to see the dolls look attractive. I bought some false hair which I used for beards on the faces of the Old Testament men dolls. It is well to have a few small baby dolls for the mother dolls to be carrying. Children always seem pleased to see the habies. If you have an euonymus or winged burning bush, the stems of it make wonderful palm trees. Green flannel or felt can be cut out and sewed on the tops of the palms. In the story of the baby Moses, I used the half of a walnut shell for the ark. I folded brown pieces of paper together, then sewed them and slashed it for bulrushes. In the lesson of manna, I dug out the centers of corks and filled them with tapioca. Cotton pasted on a stick was the pillar of cloud. Don’t be afraid to be original. When giving a sand table lesson, you have to make sure all the chil dren are grouped around you in such a way that all can see. That means that the smallest children have to be next to the table. Make sure you have the story well in your own mind before the lesson. You can’t use notes and give an effective lesson. END.
