Ladycats get bronzed for end of the season

The Wildcats had a five-zero lead heading to the final whistle when Trenton managed to score one try to tie up the board and force the game into over-time. Trenton slipped by RDHS with a two-point kick in the shootout to move on to the final round. “We were almost in the gold medal,” said Wildcats Coach Bill Foster, adding that Trenton’s coach praised RDHS for having such a tough and competitive team. “He said we have a fabulous team, and he couldn’t believe how tough we played. He said, ‘For such a small school, you have such a good team.’” Wildcats co-captain Katrina Funk and her team mates are more than happy about their game against Trenton.

“When a consecutive four-year OFSSA team coach says we are really good, that is extremely good,” Funk said. RDHS squared off against Merivale High School in the bronze finals and bowled over Merivale 27-5. Coach Foster cited Funk, Katie Sampson, Jessica Joubarne and Gwenn Bar- rett for “outstanding play” during the three-day OFSSA finals. “I’m really happy with the bronze medal we re- ceived,” said Funk. “I’m happy to finish off Grade 12 with the bronze.” “For me, I thought we had a great season,” said Coach Foster. “We had a very young team this year, but we’re going to have a lot of junior play- ers who are very experienced next year, so we’ll have a very good team again.”

Rockland | The weather for June has proven stormy but for the Wildcats varsity girls, it just meant competition from the skies as they rolled out their own version of thunderstorm during the provincial high school rugby cham- pionships in Richmond. Rockland District High School (RDHS) bashed and battered Trenton High, four-time provin- cial champion, in the semi-finals of the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Asso- ciations (OFSSA) and almost knocked the other team out of the running for the gold-medal final.
