share that they had taken in his afflic tion at this time recalls to Paul’s mind their fellowship with him in his work and needs from the very “ beginning of the Gospel” (i. e., the beginning of the evangelization of that region). They alone of all the churches when he departed from Macedonia “ had fellow ship with him in the matter of giving (i. e., their giving) and receiving (i. e., his receiving).” “ Even in Thessalon- ica (to which place he went almost immediately on leaving Philippi— Acts 17:11— and which was only ninety-two miles away, and where his stay was brief) they sent once and again to his need.” We learn from his epistle to the church in Thessalonica that his need there was very great (cf. 1 Thess. 2:9) and after ten years he remem bers with gratitude their thoughtful kindness at that time. He has also reminded them in v. 11 that it is not “'the gift” that he “ seeks for” and he reminds them of it here again. The word translated “ seek for” is a very strong word. But while he was not seeking for their gift, there is some thing for which he is seeking, that is “ the fruit (the fruit of the Spirit) that

increaseth to your account.” Not a gift for self but increasing fruit and reward for them was what Paul was aiming at (cf. Matt. 25:21, 34-40). EVIL THOUGHTS I suppose there are few Christians who have not suffered from evil thoughts— those troublesome intruders upon our most profound retirement-—those con stant disturbers of our mental repose, that so frequently darken the atmosphere around us, and prevent us from getting a full, clear view upward into the bright heaven above. The Psalmist could say, “I hate vain thoughts.” No wonder. They are truly hateful, and should be judged, condemned, and expelled. Some one, in speaking of the subject of evil thoughts, has said, “I cannot prevent birds from flying over me, but I can prevent their alighting upon me. In like manner, I cannot prevent evil thoughts being sug gested to my mind, but I can refuse them a lodgment therein. ’^-McIntosh.
