The Meandering Moselle & Sparkling Luxembourg

From our base in the picturesque Moselle Valley, we keep the mighty Moselle largely in our sights as we explore, spending time marvelling at the Roman monuments in ancient Trier, exploring Cochem’s charming Old Town and relaxing on a beautiful Moselle River cruise. We also make the most of our proximity to Luxembourg’s border with visits to the capital, Luxembourg City, and a tasting at the Bernard-Massard Winery,

known for its sparkling wines. SUGGESTED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Cochem & Moselle Cruise

This morning we head to the pretty riverside town of Cochem, from where we embark on a 1 hour circular cruise along the Moselle River, enjoying views of Reichsburg Castle and the surrounding vineyards. We spend the rest of the day in Cochem at leisure, giving us time to explore the Old Town, made up of quaint squares, winding alleys, half-timbered buildings and imposing town gates, watched over by its magnificent 11th century Reichsburg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece perched on a rocky outcrop from where there are fantastic views. We return to our hotel via a scenic driving route along the banks of the mighty Moselle. Day 3 Trier & Bernard-Massard Winery Today we head to the city of Trier. We spend the morning exploring this fascinating place and its treasure trove of well-preserved Roman structures, including the spectacular Roman city gate – Porta Nigra, the grand Saint Peter’s Cathedral, and Aula Palatina, a Roman palace basilica. We might like to visit the Archaeological Museum to discover life in Roman Trier, or take to the water again for another relaxing boat cruise on the Moselle River. In the afternoon we visit the Bernard-Massard winery, the leading family producer of still and sparkling wines in Luxembourg, with a whopping 3.5 million bottles leaving its cellars every year. During our visit we enjoy a tasting of two of the fantastic wines. Day 4 Luxembourg City Today we visit the vibrant capital of Luxembourg, Luxembourg City. We start our day with a 2 hour, step-on guided tour of the city to get our bearings, before enjoying the afternoon at leisure. We can revisit some of our favourite sights from this morning’s tour or uncover more of the city’s gems. Attractions include the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg – the Grand Ducal Palace, the 17th century Cathédrale Notre-Dame, the fascinating National Museum of History and Art, and the 18th century tunnels and WWII shelter at Casemates du Bock. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
