AUSTRIA
Neuschwanstein Castle
Castles of Ludwig & Summit of Zugspitze Take in some of the most iconic and picture-perfect settings in Austria and Germany, from dramatic Bavarian castles to spectacular Tyrolean alpine scenery. We visit Ettal Abbey as well as King Ludwig II’s Hohenschwangau Castle, Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle – the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s majestic castle. A journey to the summit of the imposing Zugspitze mountain rounds off this fantastic tour. SUGGESTED ITINERARY Day 1 Arrival We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Day 2 Lermoos Driver’s Day Off We spend today at leisure, taking advantage of our hotel’s facilities or exploring locally. Day 3 Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau & Füssen Today we visit the most romantic castle in the world, King Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein. Used as Walt Disney’s inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle, the mock-medieval architecture and stunning views have to be seen to be believed. After time for lunch, we visit King Ludwig’s childhood home, Hohenschwangau Castle, with its richly furnished interiors. We then spend the rest of our day exploring the beautiful monastic town of Füssen at leisure. Please note: payment for entry to both castles is cash on the day and pre-booking is required. Entrance to both castles involves an uphill walk (buses or horses & carriages available at an extra charge) and there are steps within both castles. Day 4 Linderhof Palace & Ettal Abbey Our first destination today is King Ludwig’s Linderhof Palace, where we admire intricately ornate interiors and the beautiful gardens, designed by Carl von Effner, which combine formal Baroque-style with Italian Renaissance and landscaping. After time for lunch, we visit Ettal Abbey, a stunning Benedictine Monastery famous for its production of beer and cheese, both of which can be bought in the adjoining shop. Please note: extensive restoration work in and around the Venus Grotto at Linderhof Palace will last until the end of 2024. The Grotto cannot be visited during this time. Day 5 Zugspitze & Garmisch-Partenkirchen Today we enjoy an amazing journey to the top of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, which sits at 2,962 metres above sea level with the Austrian-German border running through its western summit. We start our ascent from the Austrian side via the stunning cable car journey from nearby Ehrwald, soaking in some of the most dramatic views we will ever see along the way. We spend some time at the summit, crossing into Germany, with time to admire the views of 400 mountain peaks spanning four countries, visible on clear days from the café and terraces. We then descend the German side of the mountain by cable car, before a cogwheel train transports us to the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we enjoy some time at leisure. Day 6 Departure After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
